Full Job Description
As a QA Engineer, you will help ensure the quality of Aderant's suite of legal software, spanning our practice of law products. You will be responsible for testing within your assigned product areas - including manual verification and exploratory testing, automation and gated tests, test plans, performance and load testing, product integration testing, and production feature flag testing. In this role, you will be a key part of the quality gate for new releases, helping determine when a version is ready to roll out and when more time is needed, so our clients receive the quality they expect from Aderant. You will work closely with developers, architects, QA engineers, product owners, and support staff.
What you'll do in this role:
Plan testing for features and releases: turn requirements and user stories into test cases, identify risks and edge cases, and recommend what should be automated and what should remain manual.
Build and maintain automated tests across layers:
Web end-to-end tests (e.g., Playwright)
API, contract, and unit-level tests, alongside developers
Run manual and exploratory testing, including release checklists, regression passes, and structured test sessions on QA environments.
Test integrations across databases, connectors, identity/SSO, and other Aderant products, verifying data flows, contracts, and failure behavior - not just screens.
Contribute to non-functional testing, including performance, load, and resilience scenarios with measurable pass criteria.
Keep automation reliable: fix flaky tests, keep tests independent of shared accounts and pre-set configuration, and manage test data so runs do not interfere with each other.
Help integrate tests into CI/CD (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) so the right suites run on every pull request, nightly, and before release.
Report clearly: log reproducible defects with evidence, track test cases and results in Azure DevOps, and summarize coverage, results, and risks for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Work across environments (dev, QA, staging), coordinating with developers and operations on environment setup, backend support, test accounts, and configuration.
What success looks like:
First 3 months: You know our products, environments, and existing test suites; you run release manual verification independently; and you have shipped your first automated tests and fixes for flaky ones.
First 6 months: You are the primary tester for a product area, working with limited guidance; you have added automated coverage for paths that were previously manual-only; and your tests run reliably in CI without ongoing support.
First year: You are contributing improvements to integration, database, or performance testing, and sharing what you learn with newer QA engineers.
What we're looking for:
3-5 years of experience in software QA, including at least 2 years writing automated tests.
Hands-on experience with a modern UI automation framework, ideally Playwright.
Experience testing REST APIs (Postman, Playwright request, or code-based tests) and reading request/response payloads in browser DevTools.
Working knowledge of SQL for checking data and setting up test conditions.
Experience with Git, pull requests, and running tests in CI pipelines.
A solid grasp of test design: equivalence partitioning, boundary values, state transitions, and risk-based prioritization.
Comfort with both manual and exploratory testing, and sound judgment about when each approach is the right one.
Clear written communication: bug reports a developer can act on and summaries a manager can read.
A working habit of using AI coding assistants to speed up test creation and investigation.
Preferred experience:
Experience with Jest or similar unit-test frameworks, and with mocking or stubbing backends.
Knowledge of C# scripting and TypeScript for writing and maintaining test automation.
Contract testing (consumer-driven contracts, schema validation) or testing third-party integrations.
Performance or load testing (k6, JMeter, or similar).
Azure DevOps Boards and Test Cases, and Azure-hosted environments.
Experience with SSO / OAuth / OIDC login flows and multi-tenant SaaS configuration.
Familiarity with legal or professional-services software.
