Full Job Description
The City of Port Townsend is recruiting to fill one vacancy in our Public Works Department at either the Director or Deputy Director level, depending on qualifications.

Leading an engineering department in the small community of Port Townsend provides a great opportunity to use true engineering ingenuity, especially as it relates to non-motorized transportation, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure planning. Due to the unique history of the development of Port Townsend, opportunities are abound for out of the box and progressive thinking. Meanwhile, enjoy the wonderful seaport and natural beauty of the area. Water is the name of the game in Port Townsend whether addressing capital need for our 30-mile water supply pipeline, protecting the shoreline against erosion, or kayaking, fishing, sailing, diving, etc. Located in Western Washington, Port Townsend has only 20 inches of rain per year. Come help us make this corner of the world a little better than we found it.

Occasional remote work may be allowed per City policy and approval of the supervisor.

Public Works Director

Salary range: $147,538-182,947

Minimum requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of seven years of professional level public works experience with at least three years of supervisory and managerial responsibilities including working knowledge of public works administration, wastewater, water, transportation and maintenance operations in a municipal agency.
  • An extensive combination of directly relevant experience and training may substitute for formal education.
  • Valid Washington Driver's License and maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Preferred qualifications
  • A Master's degree in a related field.
  • Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer.


Deputy Public Works Director/City Engineer

Salary range: $133,821-165,938

Minimum requirements
  • Licensed engineer in the State of Washington or the ability to obtain a license within 6 months of hire
  • Graduation from college with a degree in civil engineering or closely related field
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience as a practicing licensed engineer, 4 years of which is in a management role
  • 2 years of experience working in a municipal engineering environment
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Preferred qualifications
  • Master of Science Degree in a related field
  • 10 years of experience practicing as a licensed engineer, 6 of which is in a management role and municipal engineering position or as a consultant for governmental agencies
