Position Title: Psychiatrist

Location: WELL Health Medical Centres - High River: 300 High Country Drive NW, High River, Alberta T1V 0J4,

Position Class: Full-time

Position Summary:

The Psychiatrist is responsible for providing specialized medical services related to mental health, including the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of psychiatric disorders, emotional and behavioural conditions, and substance-use concerns. The Physician delivers care in outpatient clinical settings and, where authorized, inpatient, hospital consultation, emergency, and virtual care environments, in accordance with provincial legislation, College standards, and evidence-based medical practice. Possession of an additional subspecialty or fellowship training (e.g., Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Addictions Psychiatry, or Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry) is considered a significant asset.

What You'll Do:
  • Examine patients and obtain comprehensive medical and psychiatric histories to assess mental health status, risk, functioning, and treatment needs.
  • Diagnose and treat mental, emotional, behavioural, and substance-use disorders and related medical or psychosocial concerns.
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric care to patients, including assessment, treatment planning, medication management, and crisis or risk management.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic investigations and assessments, including laboratory investigations, mental status examinations, rating scales, and relevant medical records.
  • Prescribe, administer, and monitor medications and other therapeutic treatments in accordance with accepted medical practice.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment and follow-up plans for psychiatric conditions and mental health concerns.
  • Provide specialist consultations and medical opinions to referring physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic psychiatric interventions, including psychotherapy, crisis interventions, capacity or risk assessments, and medication management, where clinically appropriate and authorized.
  • Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans, medications, or therapeutic interventions as required.
  • Maintain complete and accurate medical records and documentation in compliance with legal, regulatory, and professional standards.
  • Educate patients and families regarding mental health conditions, treatment options, medication effects and risks, crisis planning, and preventive care.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including family physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, therapists, and community mental health providers.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards of the provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and continuing professional development activities.


You have:
  • Medical degree from a recognized medical school.
  • Completion of an approved residency program in Psychiatry.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC).
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure with the applicable provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Completion of accredited subspecialty or fellowship training is strongly desired but not mandatory.
  • Membership in good standing with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).


This is a Fee for Service position, average income range for this position in the province is between 250,000$ and 400,000$.
