Essential Functions
Working in close partnership with the president and campus community, the next provost will help shape Loyola's future and realize the aspirations of its strategic plan, Together We Rise. Founded in 1852, Loyola is one of the nation's oldest Jesuit institutions and a nationally recognized comprehensive university located in Baltimore, Maryland. Loyola combines the strengths of a rigorous liberal arts foundation with highly regarded professional and graduate programs, educating students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world while remaining firmly grounded in its Jesuit commitment to educating the whole person. The University enrolls approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students, benefits from an engaged network of more than 80,000 alumni and is widely recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, student success, social mobility, and Jesuit values.
The provost leads the Office of Academic Affairs, which encompasses Loyola College of Arts and Sciences, the Sellinger School of Business and Management, and the School of Education, as well as a broad portfolio of academic support and student-focused units. The University offers more than 40 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs across these schools and is supported by more than 485 faculty members, including 344 full-time faculty. With a faculty-student ratio of 12:1 and a culture defined by close student-faculty engagement, Loyola's academic community is deeply committed to transformational education, intellectual inquiry, and the formation of ethical and professional leaders grounded in the Jesuit tradition.
The next provost will inherit a culture characterized by strong student-faculty engagement, meaningful collaboration across the institution, and a shared commitment to educating the whole person. Reporting directly to President Terrence Sawyer, the provost serves as the University's chief academic officer, second-ranking executive, and principal partner to the president on academic and institutional strategy. As a key member of the senior leadership team and the University's senior administrative officer in the president's absence, the provost provides leadership across the academic enterprise while helping advance Loyola's institutional priorities and long-term aspirations. Loyola offers a distinctive opportunity for a provost who values both the intimacy of a student-centered academic community and the complexity of leading strategic growth across a comprehensive university. The institution's highly relational culture, strong commitment to undergraduate education grounded in the liberal arts, established and growing portfolio of graduate and professional programs, deep Jesuit tradition, and longstanding commitment to service and engagement in the Baltimore community create a leadership environment that is both mission-centered and forward-looking.
The new provost will join Loyola at a pivotal and promising time. Guided by Together We Rise, the University is steadfastly committed to goals related to student success, academic innovation, faculty excellence, enrollment growth, and institutional sustainability. The successful candidate will provide strategic academic leadership, align academic priorities with enrollment
and financial strength, advance faculty and student success, and help position Loyola for continued distinction and long-term success.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished academic leader with credentials meriting appointment as a tenured professor and a demonstrated record of strategic leadership in a complex higher education environment. Loyola seeks a leader who values and understands Jesuit, Catholic education and who can thoughtfully integrate mission, academic excellence, student development, and institutional sustainability in support of the University's long-term aspirations. The successful candidate will be deeply committed to student success and faculty excellence and will bring the exceptional judgment, humility, courage, and integrity necessary to lead within Loyola's highly relational culture. An accessible and collaborative partner, the next provost will inspire trust, communicate with clarity, balance consultation with decisive action, and embrace the opportunity to help lead Loyola through its next chapter of growth, innovation, and mission-driven excellence.
