About the role Amaris Consulting is looking for a
Protection & Control Engineer to support high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substation projects across transmission and distribution.
You'll design protection and control systems for AC, HVDC and FACTS projects, as well as data centers, industrial facilities and BESS applications. Reporting to the Project P&C Lead or Project Engineering Manager, you'll prepare accurate, standards-compliant design packages and support technical decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
Your responsibilities - Develop protection and control designs for T&D substations, data centers, industrial facilities and BESS projects.
- Prepare protection single-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, tripping tables and matrices, logic diagrams, metering and alarm schematics, panel arrangements and wiring diagrams.
- Produce auxiliary AC and DC one-line diagrams.
- Perform DC battery and charger sizing, voltage-drop calculations and auxiliary AC power calculations.
- Review P&C deliverables, including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel arrangements, schematics and wiring documentation.
- Work with electrical layout engineers and designers, relay setting engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers and field teams.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturers, and review their technical documentation.
- Support the preparation of FAT and SAT procedures.
- Participate in constructability reviews.
- Work with the Project Engineering Manager and P&C Lead to resolve technical design issues.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, technical accuracy and delivery deadlines.
What you bring Required qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Experience designing protection and control systems for HV or EHV substations.
- Experience with utility, renewable energy or industrial projects.
- Knowledge of substation voltage levels ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
Preferred qualifications - P.Eng. designation in Canada, PE license in the United States, or eligibility to obtain one within 12 months.
- Experience with SEL, ABB or GE Multilin IEDs.
- Experience with relay settings and SCADA configuration files.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850, including process bus and station bus systems.
- Familiarity with NERC-CIP requirements and ANSI/NEC codes.
- Experience using ETAP or Aspen OneLiner for relay coordination, short-circuit studies, load flow, or arc-flash analysis.
- Experience with AutoCAD or EBase.
- Experience with AIS and GIS substations.
- Exposure to field testing and commissioning activities.
