Full Job Description

ResponsibilitiesThe Property Claims Director leads and manages the commercial property claims team and ensures the timely and accurate resolution of frequency and complex property claims. This position drives strategic claim handling, manages loss costs, and ensures compliance with best practices to deliver superior outcomes for insureds and the organization. Key functions include but are not limited to:

Lead key functions related to attracting, retaining, and developing talent within the claims organization.
Directly manage a team of claims professionals handling complex claims.
Establish and maintain accountability for developing the technical expertise of claims professionals.
Encourage professional growth throughout the claims organization.
Develop key performance indicators and participate in performance reviews.
Work closely with the Senior Vice President and Chief Claims Officer on the vision, planning, and execution required to create a best-in-class claims organization.
Develop and use metrics and analytics to identify trends.
Directly manage the department's internal quality audit process to ensure compliance with claims best practices, processes, and procedures.
Complete quarterly audits to assess the health of the business.
Design action plans to address identified areas of opportunity.
Maintain a 90 percent meets rating within claims audits.
Lead roundtable discussions in accordance with department best practices.
Partner with internal and external stakeholders to achieve and sustain a 90 percent customer satisfaction rating.
Set the strategic direction for managing property claims.
Develop and lead services for large catastrophe events, ensuring timely responses and effective resource allocation.
Conduct in-person visits to large or total loss claims when needed to align vendors, assess progress, and meet directly with customers to reinforce service excellence.
Collaborate with multiple departments to ensure sound reserving practices are established and maintained.
Partner with Actuarial during claims reviews and develop a regular communication cadence regarding loss trends.
Maintain knowledge of targeted industries to identify risks, trends, and support needs.
Report to reinsurers and facilitate the prompt collection of reinsurance for assigned matters.
Ensure compliance with W. R. Berkley Corporation large loss reporting requirements.
Manage vendor relationships by selecting best-in-class vendors, monitoring performance, and conducting regular audits to ensure compliance and quality standards.
Attend industry conferences and share relevant industry trends with the claims organization.
Maintain appropriate state licenses and complete continuing education requirements.
Develop relationships with peers across W. R. Berkley Corporation operating units to share information and learn about industry trends.
Drive the adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital claims platforms, to improve efficiency and accuracy in property claims handling.
Champion process automation and workflow optimization to reduce cycle times and enhance the customer experience.
Explore and implement advanced data analytics for trend identification, fraud detection, and loss prevention strategies.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging creative problem-solving and piloting innovative solutions.
Collaborate with Information Technology and vendor partners to integrate tools for virtual inspections, remote estimating, and catastrophe response.

QualificationsEducation

Bachelor's degree required.
Advanced degree, including a Juris Doctor or Master of Business Administration, preferred.
Industry certifications such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Associate in Claims, or Certified Property and Financial Insurance designation strongly preferred.

Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial property claims, including large loss and catastrophe management.
Experience managing vendor networks, including restoration, engineering, and forensic accounting vendors.
Proven leadership experience developing high-performing property claims teams.
Must maintain appropriate state licenses and complete required continuing education.
Ability to travel approximately 15 to 20 percent.

Skills

Strong knowledge of commercial property coverage forms, valuation methods, and building codes.
Knowledge of large loss and catastrophe claim management.
Knowledge of sound reserving practices.
Familiarity with analytics tools used for trend identification and reserving accuracy.
Excellent negotiation and communication skills for complex property disputes.
Strong leadership, talent development, and performance management skills.
Ability to develop and apply key performance indicators.
Ability to manage internal quality audits and corrective action plans.
Ability to manage vendor relationships and monitor vendor performance.
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal departments, actuarial partners, reinsurers, vendors, customers, and other stakeholders.
Knowledge of artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, digital claims platforms, process automation, and workflow optimization.
Ability to use data analytics for trend identification, fraud detection, and loss prevention.
Ability to support virtual inspections, remote estimating, and catastrophe response processes.
