The Opportunity
South Bow’s Safety team is seeking a Project Safety Specialist based in Calgary, AB, or Houston, TX.
Reporting to the Manager of Safety & Security, this role will focus on the projects portfolio to evaluate contractor safety management systems, programs, processes, and work practices for compliance with South Bow’s Management System while providing Health & Safety support and expertise to enable our business to manage risk and protect the wellbeing of our people.
What You’ll Do
- Advance South Bow’s safety vision, strategy, and priorities in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
- Translate occupational health and safety regulations, internal standards, and industry best practices into practical guidance
- Advise project teams on safety requirements throughout all phases of project execution
- Assess contractor safety programs, plans, management systems, and work practices against company and regulatory requirements
- Document findings and partner with contractors to close gaps, develop bridging documents, and implement corrective actions before approval
- Identify high-energy hazards and implement measures to reduce risk
- Evaluate contractor safety performance through reviews, audits, and field inspections, verifying that project safety plans are current, fit for purpose, and effectively implemented
- Lead and direct third-party project safety inspection resources
- Document contractor evaluations and maintain qualification records in the ISN contractor management platform
- Develop tools and processes to evaluate contractor safety management systems
- Reassess approved contractors’ safety programs and performance, and apply lessons learned to strengthen contractor safety management processes
- Lead contractor incident reviews and drive the development of effective corrective actions
- Maintain Incident Command System (ICS) qualifications and support incident response when required
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in health and safety, an occupational health and safety certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least six years of related health and safety experience in oil and gas pipeline operations or construction, including upstream, midstream, or downstream environments
- Demonstrated knowledge of occupational health, personal and process safety programs, operational management systems, corporate governance, and contractor management
- Strong technical safety expertise, including contractor safety management, safety plan development, hazard identification, incident investigation, and emergency preparedness and response
- Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and state health and safety legislation, including OSHA, COHSR, and other applicable standards
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience executing cross-border pipeline and/or facility construction projects in the oil and gas sector
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or an equivalent safety certification
- Technical knowledge of confined space entry, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, hot work, work at height, process safety, vehicle safety, and related areas
This position requires candidates to:
- Maintain valid authorization to travel internationally, including to Canada and the U.S.
- Travel to company locations in the U.S. and Canada, including occasional overnight stays
- Provide emergency support as required
