Full Job Description
Overview:

The Project Manager ("PM") leads SB Energy's utility-scale solar photovoltaic ("PV") and Battery Energy Storage System ("BESS") projects through late-stage development and pre-construction, ensuring each project is fully ready for construction mobilization and has successfully closed the initial project financing. This role bridges development and execution by driving permitting, finalizing site control, establishing relationships with stakeholder and authorities having jurisdiction, contracting, engineering, and financial close activities, then handing the project off to the PM responsible for the full build-out.

The PM is responsible for the project budget, schedule, risk management, and cross-functional coordination during this critical stage. The PM is expected to be the principal decision maker in all aspects during the phase.

At SB Energy our values are more than words on a page-they are the foundation for how we operate, make decisions, and measure success. As a PM, you are not just responsible for driving business outcomes but also for embodying and reinforcing our culture.

A PM is a culture champion, both within and outside of the organization. You lead with an ownership mindset, ensuring that challenges are met with solutions. You take initiative in fostering connection-whether by being the first to check in on a colleague, or showing up fully engaged to meetings and being a magnanimous leader.

Beyond driving project success, you cultivate a thriving team environment by welcoming diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that every voice is heard. Most importantly, you pursue our mission with joy-approaching each challenge with resilience and a commitment to making a meaningful impact.

Responsibilities:
  • Project Ownership: Oversee BESS and PV+BESS projects from advanced development through pre-construction, ensuring a clean and timely hand-off to the construction execution team.
  • Contracting & EPC Engagement:
    • Support the negotiations and execution of EPC contract(s) and other critical project agreements.
    • Manage Limited Notice-to-Proceed contracts and owner-furnished equipment contracts and integration with EPC scope.
    • Coordinate with Construction and Engineering to ensure design basis and schedule alignment before mobilization.
    • Collaborate with subject matter experts to select appropriate consultants and manage consultant contracts efficiently.
  • Internal Process Management:
    • Maintain and track project budgets and pre-construction schedules
    • Establish and manage the Plan of Record and oversee the project document management system.
    • Provide regular, data-driven updates to leadership and external partners.
    • Identify and mitigate project risks, scope gaps, and scope changes.
    • Direct and mentor project-specific Project Coordinator(s), delegating tasks as appropriate.
    • Develop detailed hand-off packages and coordinate knowledge transfer to the assigned Construction Project Manager.
  • Leadership & Task Management:
    • Lead internal and external project meetings, maintain organized meeting notes and action-item trackers, and utilize Monday.com for transparent task management and follow-up.
    • Orchestrate cross-functional collaboration across SB Energy-including Development, Power Marketing, Interconnection, Engineering, Capital Markets, Permitting, Procurement, Quality, Real Estate, Safety, O&M, and Asset Management-through all late-stage development and pre-construction milestones. Define clear deliverables, monitor progress against the Plan of Record, address conflicts or scope gaps promptly, and escalate issues early to protect budget and schedule.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Interface with landowners, public utilities and power purchasers to ensure conditions and milestones of site control agreement(s), interconnection agreement(s), and power purchase agreement(s) are met.
  • Permitting & Regulatory Compliance: Engage with authorities having jurisdiction and permitting authorities/agencies to obtain all required permits for the project, including but not limited to, special/conditional use permit(s), environmental permits, and building permits.
  • Financial Close & Independent Engineer Coordination: Work with finance parties, legal counsel(s), and independent engineer (lender representative) to support the financial milestones/closings.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • 7-10 + years of experience managing utility-scale PV, BESS, and PV+BESS projects.
  • Experience performing the above duties and responsibilities for utility-scale PV and BESS projects.
  • Ability to travel 25-50% of the time, as needed.
  • Expertise in MS Office Suite, MS Project and/or P6 (optional), Monday.com and other project management tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communications and presentation skills are essential.

Location: San Francisco Bay Area or San Diego, CA; Denver, CO; Houston, TX or Remote option available.

The position requires up to 25-50% domestic travel.

Base Pay - $140,000 - $165,000
