Position Title

Project Engineer - Transportation Engineering

Position Purpose

Plans, designs, and directs transportation engineering projects. This is a technical position involved in non-routine and complex assignments related to roadway, highway, drainage, traffic, and transportation infrastructure projects. The Project Engineer works closely with the Project Manager and Lead Professional to develop and implement transportation design concepts and deliver high-quality engineering solutions. The Project Engineer may handle some project management responsibilities but will primarily focus on technical execution and coordination.

Essential Functions

Leads technical tasks on transportation projects
  • Participates in project planning, including preparation of scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develops engineering design concepts for transportation projects, including roadway geometry, drainage systems, traffic control, signing and pavement markings, and related infrastructure improvements.
  • Uses and maintains current knowledge of transportation engineering software, design standards, procedures, and regulations, including DOT and local agency requirements.
  • Performs engineering analyses and calculations related to transportation design projects.
  • Mentors and may lead younger engineers and technicians on technical design tasks.

Develop project deliverables
  • Prepares or modifies reports, computations, specifications, plans, studies, permits, and engineering designs for transportation projects.
  • Prepares or modifies quantity estimates, construction documents, and cost estimates.
  • Assures drawings and designs are in accordance with project requirements and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
  • Coordinates preparation of design plans and technical documents for agency review and approval.

Collaborate with project team members
  • Coordinates with the overall Project Manager and project team, including clients, subconsultants, and regulatory agencies, on project tasks.
  • Attends project, client, and public meetings, day or night, as required.
  • Assists with coordination between engineering disciplines to support project delivery.

Task quality, schedule, and budget adherence
  • Optimizes the scope, budget, and schedule of the project/task under the direction of the Project Manager.
  • Communicate changes in workload, project scope, schedules, and budgets with the Project Manager.
  • Direct and reviews work of project team members to assure quality control and compliance with firm standards.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Potential supervision of team members, including engineer interns and/or project technicians.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard, calculator, and telephone; talk and hear; climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception; ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field and a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Experience in transportation engineering design projects.
  • Familiarity with transportation design standards and software such as MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar applications preferred.
  • Ability to relate to clients and people at all levels of the organization and possess excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents and engineering standards.
  • Ability to operate a computer using technical software applications, spreadsheets, and other business software.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the associate performs responsibilities equally in both a typical office and outdoor environment and is exposed to weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is usually moderate. The associate is frequently exposed to noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors present in field situations. Nights away from home may be required.

Hours of Work

This is a full-time position requiring 40+ hours per week. This position can be non-exempt or exempt. Nights away from home and weekend commitments to the firm, its associates, and clients may be required.
