Job Summary

The Department of History and Geography in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for a tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in Texas history, with broader expertise in the history of the Greater Southwest. The successful candidate will also serve as Director of UTA's Center for Greater Southwestern Studies, fostering interdisciplinary research, public-facing scholarship, and engagement with the rich historical resources of the University and the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will maintain a productive research agenda and serve as the Director of the Center for Greater Southwestern Studies, providing intellectual and administrative leadership for the Center's interdisciplinary research, public-facing scholarship, community engagement, and external funding initiatives. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor master's and doctoral research in Texas and Greater Southwestern history, contribute to curricular programs within the department and college, and participate in the departmental, university, and professional service. The Director will support the Center's existing programs and develop new initiatives, which may include digital humanities projects, collaborations with UTA Libraries Special Collections, partnerships with cultural and community organizations, and grant-funded research and programming.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in History
• An established record of research and publication in Texas and/or the Greater Southwest, commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
• Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in teaching courses in Texas history

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in theories, methods, and/or tools of the Digital Humanities
• Record of interdisciplinary research and publication
• Administrative or program leadership experience
• Demonstrated record of securing grants or other external funding
• Experience developing or contributing to public-facing humanities projects
• Evidence of successful collaboration with scholars, cultural institutions, archives, libraries, or community partners

The Department of History and Geography (https://www.uta.edu/academics/schools-colleges/liberal-arts/departments/history) offers three bachelor's degree plans, a minor in Geography, and numerous other minor options at the undergraduate level; at the graduate level, the Department offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History, as well as a graduate certificate in Archival Administration. Along with offering core-compliant courses in geography and US history to students from across the University, we have about 250 majors and 60 graduate students. Our award-winning faculty offer courses in a rich array of specialties with particular strengths in the digital humanities, in the history of gender, immigration, and labor, in cultural history, in transnational history, and in the history of science and technology. The College of Liberal Arts is the largest in the University with twelve departments in the liberal arts, fine arts, humanities, and social sciences.
