Full Job Description

It is our intention to fill this role in Columbus, OH. The hired associate must reside within 35 miles of One Nationwide Plaza, Columbus OH, 43215.

This position will be hired on a SuccessFlex basis. You will be required to come into the office, according to the department's current hybrid schedule.

As a Consultant, Product Tax, you'll lead enterprise-wide governance and oversight of product-related tax reporting and withholding to ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws. You'll review tax filings and related responses, assess and monitor product tax risks through analytics and audits, and translate regulatory developments into practical tax strategies for new and existing products. We'll count on you to collaborate with business partners, IT, vendors and the Tax COE to design and test tax logic, manage key product tax systems and calendars, provide training and guidance to stakeholders, and support day-to-day operations of tax reporting and withholding across the enterprise.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Reviews federal and state tax returns. Performs on-site review with business partners if required.
  • Perform governance & oversight functions, including tax risk assessments and audits, to ensure compliance within our business line partners.
  • Monitor product and tax laws and regulatory developments and analyze enterprise impact. Communicate impact to management and key stakeholders and assist and provide guidance with implementation across the enterprise. May represent and serve on product tax industry committees.
  • Research and analyze product tax risks and recommend solutions and tax strategies including new product launches and changes.
  • Design and test tax withholding & reporting logic in collaboration with, business analysist, IT and vendors. May act as primary point of contact with key vendors on day to day matters.
  • Manage and review user access to key product tax systems used across the enterprise.
  • Reviews response to IRS, state information requests and/or external auditors. Works closely with tax analysts and consultants to identify risks and tax adjustments for assigned entities and response to information requests accordingly. Works closely with tax attorneys on penalty mitigation and abatement.
  • Continuously develop, monitor and provide key insights into tax analytics including forecasting.
  • Verifies accuracy and completeness of tax calendars and communicates with key stakeholders.
  • Develop training materials and conduct sessions for internal stakeholders.
  • Represents Tax COE in regularly scheduled meetings with business partners and key stakeholders. Communicates tax issues and listens to changes in the business environment. Develop contacts at the appropriate level to aid in providing timely tax response and planning opportunities.
  • Assist with Managing day-to-day operations of tax reporting and withholding across the enterprise.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product Tax Director/Officer/Executive

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree with studies in tax, law or accounting.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPA certification, Series 6 and/or LOMA designation preferred.

Experience: Minimum of six years tax experience in a financial services and/or multi-line insurance company, public accounting firm or law firm.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of statutory and/or GAAP accounting. Knowledge of modeling and tax systems. Knowledge of research techniques. Ability to communicate with management, insurance regulators, IRS agents and consultants. Ability to analyze operating results to project tax consequences and to anticipate regulatory questions.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range. Note on Compensation for Part-Time Roles: Please be aware that the salary ranges listed below reflect full-time compensation. Actual compensation may be prorated based on the number of hours worked relative to a full-time schedule.
