About the Role
We're looking for a Messaging Lead to shape how businesses understand OpenAI and the value of our portfolio. You'll develop a clear enterprise narrative, connect individual product stories to it, and help explain how AI is changing the way people and organizations work.
You'll work directly with senior leaders and technical teams to make difficult positioning decisions and turn them into work that customers, executives, and the field can use. You'll be a hands-on writer and editor as well as a strategic partner, responsible for the quality and coherence of our most important business stories.
This is a senior individual contributor role, with the potential to build and lead a team as the function grows.
In this role, you will:
Define and evolve the enterprise narrative and the messages that connect our products to customer needs and business outcomes.
Partner with product and industry marketers to make the portfolio clear and differentiated while preserving the depth each audience needs.
Translate complex capabilities into precise, compelling stories with Product and Research.
Personally develop core enterprise pitches, executive narratives, major launch messages, and other high-priority materials.
Bring customer insight, competitive context, and credible proof into the story with GTM and Customer Marketing.
Help Marketing, Communications, and Enablement apply the narrative, and improve it through customer feedback and testing.
Coach partners on messaging and writing, and help define how the function should grow.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
14+ years of experience in B2B product marketing, positioning, or messaging, with a track record of shaping enterprise narratives and translating complex technology portfolios into clear, differentiated stories for business audiences.
A track record of leading messaging, positioning, or product marketing for complex technology portfolios serving business customers.
Exceptional writing and editing skills, with examples of work you personally created and an ability to explain the decisions behind it.
Strong product and technical judgment, including the ability to distinguish a supported claim from an appealing assertion.
Experience working with senior executives and technical leaders, resolving conflicting views, and leading without formal authority.
Evidence that your narratives were adopted by customer-facing teams and improved customer understanding or evaluation.
The willingness to work hands-on, move through ambiguity, and revise your view when evidence changes.
Practical fluency with AI tools and thoughtful judgment about where human review matters.
Experience developing marketers or building a messaging function is valuable. Previous people-management experience is not required for the initial IC role.
Workplace & Location
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. Occasional travel will be required.
