Brown and Caldwell is looking for a solids process engineer to join our Solids and Energy Practice and support our biosolids projects throughout the DC Metro area. This candidate will support local and regional teams in biosolids planning, design and construction projects. This role may also support more specialized research projects and practice initiatives beyond the Mid-Atlantic region. The ideal candidate should have strong communication skills and foundational wastewater and solids process engineering and analytical skills. The role is intended to develop and become the next generation of BC solids practitioners that can support internal project needs and lead direct engagement with key clients in the area. Our successful candidate will have a positive, can-do attitude; will be flexible and self-motivated, and the desire to grow both their technical and soft skills.
Responsibilities - Assist in collecting and analyzing data, creating basic process models and drawings under supervision.
- Provide support in evaluating current processes and suggesting optimizations.
- Prepare concise and accurate process engineering related tasks/project information
- Under direction of senior staff, perform simple tasks for larger projects
- Where applicable, observe and learn troubleshooting techniques, assist in documenting issues.
- Understand the requirements of Quality Management Plans (QMPs) for related projects.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions as a learning opportunity.
- Assist in setting up experiments, collecting data, and, where applicable, assisting in evaluating technologies.
- Support chemical/physical/biological testing and analysis, document results.
- Proactively identify and communicate any observed quality issues.
- Learn about and help to identify project risks.
- Work productively in a team and individually under close supervision from more senior staff.
- Learn about and support innovative solutions.
- Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Skills and Competencies - Basic understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in data analysis tools, strong analytical skills.
- Understanding of BC standards.
- Basic skills in technical approaches and solutions.
Experience - Typically, a minimum of 0-2 years related work experience in environmental, process engineering or related field.
- Encouraged to certify in the SMS framework in the first six months of being in the role.
Preferred Skills and Experience- Direct research experience with utilities in the DC Metro area
- General knowledge of wastewater treatment processes
- Knowledge of advanced anaerobic digestion technologies
- General knowledge of typical solids process treatment trains
- Regularly presents work and technical topics in front of colleagues and industry professionals
- Independent problem solving skills and ability to tackle complex problems
Education - A bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, chemical, mechanical, or biological engineering degree or equivalent experience is required.
Preferred Education- Doctoral degree is environmental, chemical, mechanical or civil engineering.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Location B: $71,000 - $96,000
Location C: $77,000 - $105,000
