Full Job Description
Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Principal Roku BrightScript Engineer joins the Client Platform Engineering team to build and maintain the foundational Roku platform powering streaming applications across a shared codebase strategy. This role addresses complex engineering challenges across SceneGraph architecture, media playback, DRM flows, and performance optimization on resource-constrained hardware. The position bridges reference implementations with production BrightScript code while establishing automated quality gates and AI-assisted software development workflows. Direct collaboration with product and engineering leadership ensures high-performance delivery across all target hardware tiers.

What Success Looks Like (Objectives)
  • Map production OTT modules to BrightScript equivalents while mitigating high-complexity risks in player state machines and DRM integration
  • Design a scalable scene stack, deep-linking routing architecture, and thread-safe task model for high-performance application execution
  • Enforce component library performance standards, field observer practices, and focus chain integrity across dynamic application themes
  • Integrate BrightScript-specific linting, static analysis, and device farm benchmarking into the AI-assisted development pipeline to optimize target hardware performance
  • Establish automated testing frameworks, deep-link automation, and headless performance benchmarks to maintain strict launch time and memory footprint targets

Skills, Experience and Requirements

Core Skills and Competencies (What you'll bring)
  • Expert-level mastery of SceneGraph node architecture, task threading, focus chain management, and component lifecycle optimization
  • Critical experience leading architecture design, code reviews, and binding engineering decisions for multi-engineer client applications
  • Proven ability to translate reference implementations into production BrightScript codebases while preserving behavioral fidelity across complex user flows
  • Demonstrated capability in profiling, virtualized rendering, node recycling, and garbage collection tuning on low-memory hardware devices
  • AI application expertise in authoring structured technical specifications and validating AI-generated BrightScript output for architectural and performance compliance
  • Comprehensive expertise in DRM integration, CSAI/SSAI ad architecture, and third-party SDK implementations within connected TV environments

Additional Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (MS or equivalent) in Computer Science or a relevant technical field
  • Experience in high-volume streaming media, OTT, or connected TV product environments

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline

Minimum Experience: 10+ years of professional software engineering experience

Required Technical Skills: Must have at least 5 years of experience with:
  • BrightScript application development and SceneGraph node architecture
  • Shipping production Roku applications through full Roku Channel Certification
  • Architecture ownership and technical sign-off on multi-engineer client applications
