Our Electrical Team and ProjectsOur electrical team supports a wide range of building and infrastructure projects for higher education, K-12 schools, healthcare, laboratories, municipal and institutional facilities, industrial clients, and campus environments. The work includes electrical distribution, utility service upgrades, medium-voltage systems, switchgear replacements, emergency and standby power, lighting and controls, fire alarm, life safety systems, energy studies, and phased renovations in occupied facilities. The team works closely with mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, civil, and architectural partners to deliver practical, coordinated designs that help clients improve, modernize, and plan for the future of their facilities.
Responsibilities, Requirements, and Total RewardsWhat You'll Be DoingAs a valuable part of our
Building Services team, the
Principal Electrical Engineer will provide technical leadership and project direction for multidisciplinary design teams. You will lead electrical engineering design from early planning and conceptual studies through construction documents, construction administration, and commissioning support.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Leading electrical design for building systems, campus infrastructure, utility upgrades, and facility improvement projects
- Serving as Engineer of Record for electrical projects, including power distribution, emergency and standby power, lighting, lighting controls, fire alarm, life safety, and related building systems
- Evaluating existing electrical systems and develop practical recommendations for upgrades, replacement, capacity improvements, resiliency, and future growth
- Leading engineering studies, energy efficiency reviews, load analyses, system planning, infrastructure strategy, master planning, and preliminary engineering reports
- Preparing and reviewing construction drawings, specifications, technical reports, cost estimates, and design narratives
- Supporting project delivery for traditional design-bid-build, design-build, design-assist, fast-track, and phased renovation projects
- Coordinating closely with mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, civil, architectural, and owner teams
- Providing technical QA/QC for electrical design work and help establish consistent design standards
- Mentoring and developing electrical engineers and designers through technical guidance, project review, and day-to-day collaboration
- Supporting project management efforts, including scope development, schedules, budgets, fee estimates, staffing plans, and client communication
- Participating in client meetings, presentations, interviews, and proposal efforts
- Providing construction administration support, including submittal reviews, RFIs, site observations, punch lists, and commissioning coordination
- Helping grow and strengthen Tighe & Bond's electrical and MEP presence across our New England offices
What You'll Need - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
- Professional Engineer license required
- 15+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably with a consulting engineering, AEC, or building design firm
- Significant experience leading electrical design for buildings, institutional facilities, campuses, or complex infrastructure environments
- Strong technical knowledge of normal and emergency power distribution, switchboards, switchgear, transformers, generators, medium-voltage systems, lighting, lighting controls, fire alarm, and life safety systems
- Experience evaluating existing electrical infrastructure and developing recommendations for replacement, upgrades, phasing, and long-term planning
- Ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary projects from concept through construction
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with clients, owners, architects, contractors, and internal project teams
- Experience mentoring engineers and reviewing technical work.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, life safety codes, energy codes, and industry standards
Preferred Requirements- PE licensure in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or other New England states
- Experience with higher education, healthcare, laboratory, K-12, municipal, industrial, transportation, or mission critical facilities
- Experience with occupied building renovations, phased construction, and complex shutdown coordination
- Medium-voltage distribution, campus utility infrastructure, switchgear replacement, standby power, or central plant experience
- Experience with energy audits, electrical system master planning, infrastructure assessments, and long-term capital planning
- Experience supporting proposals, fee development, staffing plans, project interviews, and client presentations.
- Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, electrical modeling/analysis tools, and current BIM coordination workflows
- Interest in helping grow an electrical practice through technical leadership, client relationships, mentoring, and collaboration
