Role Purpose
The Principal Analyst will be a recognized thought leader and go-to industry expert for our growing Americas Power Service, shaping how clients and the broader market think about power sector trends. This is a highly client-facing role: the Principal Analyst will spend significant time presenting research, exchanging views with subscribers, and building trusted relationships with senior stakeholders at consulting clients, utilities, developers, and investors. The role combines deep subject-matter expertise with the analytical rigor to develop market forecasts and proprietary models, but its primary value is delivered through the Principal Analyst's ability to translate that expertise into compelling insights – in writing, in conversation, and on stage – and to be a visible, trusted voice that clients seek out directly.
Main Responsibilities
- Establish yourself as a recognized market expert and thought leader, owning Wood Mackenzie's Long-Term and Short-Term Power Market Outlooks and shaping how the industry views its trajectory.
- Author high-profile insight pieces and thought leadership content that sets the industry narrative for clients and the broader market. Regularly present Wood Mackenzie's research and point of view at industry conferences, client events, and webinars around the globe, building a personal profile as a leading voice in the sector.
- Serve as a trusted, direct point of contact for research subscribers – building close, ongoing relationships through one-on-one conversations, inquiry response, client briefings, and a genuine exchange of views that keeps Wood Mackenzie close to how clients are thinking about the market.
- Collaborate with peers across Wood Mackenzie's research, consulting, and marketing teams to amplify thought leadership – supporting conferences, editorial coverage, media commentary, and joint client engagements.
- Own the development and improvement of Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary analytical models that underpin the market coverage.
- Develop and maintain forecast models and data sets across verticals within the Power & Renewables.
About You
- Minimum 5-7 years of industry experience in the power sector.
- Experience producing wholesale power market datasets, forecasts, and analysis for commercial purposes.
- Demonstrated track record as a subject-matter expert – someone clients and colleagues seek out for a view – with experience turning research into compelling written publications and confident verbal presentations
- Key programming & software skills include: SQL, Excel, VBA.
- Excellent problem-solving skills. Strong analytical capabilities. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions.
- Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with genuine comfort and confidence presenting to and exchanging views with senior clients and industry stakeholders, one-on-one and from a stage
- A natural relationship-builder with an engaging, credible presence – someone who enjoys getting close to clients and industry stakeholders and thrives in front of a room
- A deep intellectual curiosity about the effect of a wider business landscape
- Quantitative background and degree (e.g., economics, finance, engineering)
