Job Responsibilities
Lead and grow a DOT transportation structures team while building and maintaining strong relationships with key clients, agencies, teaming partners, and internal stakeholders.
Provide vision, business planning, and strategic direction for the transportation structures practice, including setting goals, identifying growth opportunities, and supporting long-term success.
Operate with integrity and sound business principles while promoting open communication across leadership, project teams, clients, and agency partners.
Oversee the planning, scheduling, design, and delivery of transportation structures projects, including bridges, retaining walls, culverts, sign structures, and related highway infrastructure.
Lead structural design efforts for projects of varying size and complexity using reinforced concrete, structural steel, prestressed concrete, deep and shallow foundations, and other transportation-related structural systems.
Manage projects profitably by balancing scope, budget, schedule, quality, and client expectations, while transitioning work effectively to qualified staff.
Serve as a primary point of contact for DOT clients, local agencies, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary teams, helping maintain positive working relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
Review and oversee technical deliverables, including plans, specifications, estimates, calculations, reports, and construction support services, to ensure compliance with DOT standards and project requirements.
Mentor, develop, and direct staff by providing technical guidance, reviewing work, delegating responsibility, and helping team members grow in their careers.
Support recruiting, succession planning, and team development while serving as a positive role model and trusted leader within the practice.
Contribute to business development efforts through proposal preparation, pursuit strategy, client engagement, and participation in professional organizations and industry initiatives.
Resolve complex engineering and project challenges with strong technical judgment, practical decision-making, and effective cross-functional coordination.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license required; state DOT registration, or the ability to obtain it within a reasonable timeframe, is preferred based on project location.
10+ years of progressive transportation structures or bridge engineering experience, including demonstrated leadership in project delivery, client management, and team development.
Proven ability to lead teams, manage staff, mentor developing professionals, and build a collaborative, high-performing transportation structures practice.
Strong experience managing projects from pursuit through delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, staffing, quality control, and client communication.
Experience delivering DOT plans, specifications, and estimates, with a strong understanding of state DOT and transportation agency design criteria, standards, and review processes.
In-depth knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, ACI, AISC, ASCE 7, and other applicable structural design standards; AREMA knowledge is a plus.
Experience with structural analysis and modeling software such as STAAD, CSiBridge, LEAP, MDX, LPILE, or similar tools, along with Bentley or AutoCAD-based design platforms.
Strong business development, relationship management, and communication skills, with the ability to build trust internally and externally.
Experience supporting construction services, structural inspections, rehabilitation, or load rating for transportation structures is a plus.
