Full Job Description
PowerGen SME - Natural Gas Power Generation & Controls
As a PowerGen Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide senior-level technical expertise for BJ Energy Solutions' portable power-generation systems and associated controls and distribution equipment. You will lead complex troubleshooting, support commissioning and reliability improvements, develop technical standards and help strengthen the capability of PowerGen teams across Canada and the United States.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a day-to-day supervisory position. You will work with regional leads, field technicians, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, HSE and equipment manufacturers to solve challenging issues and improve equipment performance.
What You Will Work On
• Natural-gas engine-driven generator systems and multi-generator power-generation configurations
• Generator controls, synchronization, paralleling, load sharing and protection systems
• Three-phase generation and electrical distribution, including 480-volt systems
• Switchgear, protective devices, cabling, grounding and bonding
• Controls, instrumentation, telemetry, alarm histories and equipment-performance data
• Emerging medium-voltage generation and distribution capability
What You Will Do
• Serve as the senior technical resource for generator systems, controls, electrical distribution, paralleling, synchronization, load sharing and protective systems.
• Lead advanced troubleshooting and structured root-cause analysis for generator trips, electrical faults, control issues, equipment-performance problems and repeat failures.
• Support commissioning, acceptance testing, deployment and performance validation of new or modified power-generation equipment.
• Develop and maintain technical procedures, troubleshooting guides, preventive-maintenance requirements and equipment-specific work instructions.
• Support development of PowerGen training materials, qualifications and competency assessments; mentor regional leads and technicians while respecting existing reporting structures.
• Review operational and maintenance data to identify reliability trends, recommend corrective actions and help prevent recurrence.
• Coordinate complex technical issues with OEMs, Engineering, Maintenance, HSE and third-party providers.
• Provide expertise on 480-volt generation and distribution and support the development of future medium-voltage capability.
• Participate in major field deployments and provide escalation support for significant operational issues.
• Apply BJ Energy's safety requirements, including energy isolation, lockout/tagout and qualified-worker practices; ensure regulated electrical work is performed by properly qualified personnel.
What You Bring - Required
• Significant hands-on experience with industrial power-generation systems, including demonstrated technical depth in complex equipment troubleshooting.
• Advanced knowledge of generator controls, synchronization, paralleling, load sharing, switchgear, protective devices and electrical distribution.
• Demonstrated experience commissioning and troubleshooting multi-generator systems.
• Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, control schematics, OEM manuals, alarm histories and operating data.
• Experience leading structured root-cause investigations and developing practical corrective actions.
• Working knowledge of electrical safe-work practices, lockout/tagout, qualified-electrical-worker requirements and relevant Canadian and U.S. standards.
• Experience developing technical procedures, maintenance strategies or training materials.
• Technical degree, electrical trade qualification, engineering background or equivalent directly applicable power-generation experience.
• Strong communication and mentoring skills, with the ability to explain complex issues to field personnel, leadership, engineering teams and vendors.
• Valid driver's licence and ability to travel between Canada and the United States, subject to applicable travel and work-authorization requirements.
Experience That Would Be an Asset
• Extensive experience with natural-gas engine-driven generators and mobile or remote power-generation equipment.
• Hands-on experience with generator protective relays, power-management systems, telemetry or advanced controls diagnostics.
• Exposure to medium-voltage power systems, distribution equipment or power-system expansion projects.
• Experience supporting field operations in oilfield services, hydraulic fracturing or other high-demand industrial environments.
• OEM training, acceptance-testing experience or a track record of developing technician qualification programs.
Travel & Work Environment
This role combines technical leadership with field support and may require travel to remote operations, equipment facilities and vendor locations in Canada and the United States. Participation in significant deployments and time-sensitive technical escalations may be required. Work schedules and the primary reporting location will be confirmed during recruitment.
