Primary PurposeThe Platform Engineer II supports the implementation and operation of shared observability capabilities that help engineering teams understand the health and performance of their applications and infrastructure. This role builds and maintains integrations, automation, dashboards, and monitoring standards for metrics, logs, and traces. The engineer partners with application, infrastructure, and SRE teams to improve visibility, reduce manual effort, and support faster identification and resolution of issues. This role requires extensive expertise in synthetic monitoring tools (e.g. Reveille and Datadog) and specializes in engineering proactive synthetic testing and observability. Additionally, the role involves integrating SNMP trap data into actionable metric telemetry, and contributes to the overall reliability, scalability, and adoption of the observability platform.
Our flexible/hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations are Salisbury, NC; Chicago, IL; Quincy, MA.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Duties & Responsibilities- Design, deploy, and maintain synthetic monitors across corporate endpoints to simulate end-user journeys, API flows, and critical transaction paths.
- Configure enterprise synthetic monitoring tools (e.g. Reveille and Datadog Synthetics) to proactively capture and alert availability, latency and performance degradation.
- Administrate, maintain and upgrade our on-prem Reveille synthetic monitoring tool and its infrastructure.
- Instrument and SNMP-based monitoring (MIB management, trap handling, device polling) to effectively monitor and alert network component availability, latency and performance degradation.
- Design and tune event alerting, deduplication, and escalation workflows to reduce alert fatigue and integrate with our event management system (e.g. ServiceNow).
- Collaborate with ServiceNow engineers to design, document and implement event mapping strategies to effectively bind event-related CI identifiers to ServiceNow incident correlation and assignment algorithms.
- Implement and maintain observability platform features, integrations, and standard configurations to provide consistent visibility across applications and infrastructure.
- Onboard applications, services, and infrastructure to observability tools by configuring agents, integrations, and telemetry collection in partnership with service owners.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, monitors, and alerts using established standards to help teams identify service health and performance issues.
- Automate routine platform tasks, configuration changes, and validation using scripts, APIs, and reusable templates to reduce manual effort and improve consistency.
- Support the collection and correlation of metrics, logs, and traces by helping teams apply instrumentation, tagging, and logging standards.
- Monitor the health of observability platform components, troubleshoot data collection and integration issues, and escalate complex problems with clear diagnostic information.
- Assist with platform upgrades, agent deployments, migrations, and configuration changes, including testing and validation to minimize operational impact.
- Partner with application, infrastructure, SRE, and operations teams to understand observability needs, provide technical guidance, and support platform adoption.
- Maintain documentation, runbooks, inventories, and change records, and recommend improvements that reduce alert noise, operational effort, and unnecessary telemetry consumption.
- Support critical escalations and urgent IT incidents as needed by providing observability data, technical assistance, and platform troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or equivalent practical work experience.
- 3+ years of experience engineering, maintaining and administrating the Reveille synthetic monitoring system (software, database and collector infrastructure).
- 3+ years of experience instrumenting SNMP-based monitoring (MIB management, trap handling, device polling, event enrichment and management).
- 3+ years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, operations, DevOps, or a related technical role.
- Experience integrating various event sources and data with monitoring and event management systems.
- Working knowledge of observability concepts, including metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerting.
- Experience configuring or supporting monitoring and observability tools for applications or infrastructure.
- Experience with scripting or automation using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or a similar language.
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure, CI/CD practices, APIs, and version control.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualification- 5+ years of experience in engineering and administration of the Reveille synthetic monitoring system (software, database and collector infrastructure).
- 5+ years of experience in engineering SNMP-based monitoring (MIB management, trap handling, device polling, event enrichment and management).
- 5+ years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, operations, DevOps, or a related technical role.
- 3+ years of experience scripting or automation using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or a similar language.
- 3+ years of experience in integrating events from Control-M, Reveille, and Datadog into ServiceNow.
- 2+ years of experience with Datadog capabilities such as Infrastructure Monitoring, APM, Logs, RUM, dashboards, synthetics, and monitors.
- Familiarity with management and notification tools.
- Familiarity with service-level indicators, service-level objectives, and alert tuning.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD platforms.
- Relevant methodology or observability certifications.
