Piping Designer / Drafter - Fuel Recycling

We are searching for a Piping Designer / Drafter to join our Fuel Recycling Engineering team.

Position Description

The person in this role is responsible for developing and maintaining the engineering drawings that define Oklo's first-of-a-kind (FOAK) nuclear fuel recycling facility. This includes creation and maintenance of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), piping layouts, equipment arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, and other engineering documentation supporting the design, construction, and operation of the facility.

This role will work closely with process, mechanical, electrical, controls, and systems engineers to translate engineering concepts into accurate, controlled engineering drawings that support design reviews, procurement, fabrication, construction, commissioning, and licensing.

The ideal candidate enjoys building clean, organized drawing packages, identifying inconsistencies across disciplines, and helping engineering teams efficiently communicate complex systems through high-quality documentation.

Specific responsibilities may include:

• Develop, revise, and maintain Piping/Process/Ventillation & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant3D or equivalent CAD software.
• Produce piping layout drawings, equipment arrangement drawings, piping and equipment isometrics, and general arrangement drawings for process facilities.
• Coordinate closely with process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & controls, structural, and nuclear engineers to ensure drawing consistency across disciplines.
• Incorporate engineering changes into controlled drawing packages while maintaining revision history and configuration management.
• Assist with development of drawing standards, CAD libraries, drafting procedures, and document templates.
• Perform drawing quality checks to identify inconsistencies, clashes, missing information, and opportunities for design improvement.
• Generate engineering documentation including bills of materials, equipment lists, line lists, and drawing packages supporting procurement and construction.
• Interface with fabricators, vendors, and construction teams to clarify drawings and incorporate field feedback into design revisions.
• Help establish efficient drafting workflows that support rapid design iteration within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate's degree, technical certification, or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
• 5+ years of experience producing engineering drawings for industrial facilities or process equipment.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software.
• Experience developing and maintaining Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
• Experience producing piping layouts, equipment arrangement drawings, and construction drawing packages.
• Understanding of industrial piping systems, valves, instrumentation, and process equipment.
• Familiarity with engineering drawing standards, revision control, and document management practices.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Bonus Qualifications:

• Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
• Experience creating piping assemblies, equipment layouts, or plant models in 3D CAD environments.
• Familiarity with process plant design in nuclear, chemical, petrochemical, mining, pharmaceutical, or power generation industries.
• Experience supporting facility design from conceptual design through detailed engineering and construction.
• Familiarity with piping codes and standards such as ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, or equivalent industrial standards.
• Experience using PDM/PLM systems and engineering document control systems.
• Knowledge of instrumentation symbols, ISA standards, and process control documentation.
• Experience supporting multidisciplinary design reviews, HAZOPs, or constructability reviews.
• Experience with commercial or governmental nuclear projects.
• Experience working in highly regulated industries with strong quality assurance and configuration management requirements.

Competencies

We are looking for a Piping Designer / Drafter that is:

• Passionate about clean energy and closing the nuclear fuel cycle.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, producing accurate, professional engineering drawings.
• Proficient in AutoCAD or similar 2D drafting software for industrial facility design.
• Experienced with piping and process documentation including P&IDs, piping layouts, equipment arrangements, and construction drawing packages for industrial facilities.
• Comfortable working from incomplete information and collaborating with engineers to develop evolving designs.
• Able to identify drawing inconsistencies and improve documentation quality before release.
• Excited to work on first-of-a-kind industrial facilities where designs evolve rapidly through prototyping and testing.
• Comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines and balancing competing priorities.
• An optimist at heart, comfortable in a fast-paced, highly iterative startup environment.
• An excellent communicator who can work effectively with engineers, fabricators, vendors, and project stakeholders.

Experience Level:

• Experienced (5+ years): Candidates should have demonstrated experience producing engineering drawings for industrial process facilities, manufacturing systems, power generation, chemical processing, or related industries.

Who you are:

A startup person: You aren't driven by titles or hierarchy, and prefer efficiency to excess process. You don't need or expect to have a lot of guidance but you enjoy working in a fast-paced team. If you prefer the culture and feel of a large organization, that is great, but you likely won't enjoy working with us! There is plenty of important work and plenty of good opportunities with organizations like that.

Motivated: You are self-motivated. You bring an enthusiasm to the team, and imbue a sense of passion that goes beyond clocking in and clocking out. This isn't about a fake or arbitrary "pieces of flair" mentality or lack of work-life balance! It is about being a part of the vision and feeling a part of reaching team goals.

A team-player: Oklo genuinely is a team. We aren't about taking credit for ourselves, and we aren't about pushing blame to others. We do incredible things because we work as a team.

An excellent communicator: We need a person who is not only technically competent but also a clear and upbeat communicator.

Creative: Being creative means that when things fall outside clear scopes or processes or problems arise without clear solutions, you are able to identify it as well as invent ways to solve a problem or fill a need without micromanagement. The successful person in this job will not only be creative, but also enjoy being creative and solving open-ended problems which may change day-by-day.

Detail-oriented: This focus is a big part of excellence, consistency, and quality. Excellent grammar and spelling matter for both good communication as well as the image of the company that we put forward.
