Full Job Description
Compensation: $200,000 - $275,000 yr

The Primary Care Physician is responsible for providingcomprehensive primary healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within acorrectional facility. This includes diagnosing and treating acute and chronicillnesses, managing preventive care, and coordinating with a multidisciplinaryteam to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services within a medicalhome model.

The successful applicant should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements.

Primary Healthcare Services:
  • Conduct thorough medical evaluations, physical examinations, and medical histories for incarcerated individuals
  • Diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and infections.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medications, therapies, and interventions.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pharmaceuticals, laboratory work, radiological examinations, and screenings.
    Provide vaccinations, perform health screenings, and promote preventive care measures within the correctional population.
  • Basic technical skills such as suturing, splinting and injections.

Chronic Disease Management:
  • Monitor and manage chronic diseases prevalent among incarcerated individuals, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C.
  • Ensure proper medication management, including prescribing, adjusting dosages, and monitoring treatment effectiveness.
  • Educate patients on disease management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and medication adherence.
  • Collaborate with specialty care providers for consultations and referrals, when necessary.

Emergency Medical Services:
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the correctional facility, providing immediate assessment, stabilization, and necessary interventions.
  • Coordinate with emergency medical services or arrange for transfers to external medical facilities, when required.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning and training exercises to ensure efficient emergency response within the correctional setting

Collaboration and Coordination:
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, social workers, and other correctional staff, to ensure coordinated and integrated healthcare delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, providing necessary information, consultations, and referrals.
  • Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the overall healthcare delivery system.

Documentation and Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, diagnoses, treatments, and medications administered.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality regulations and ensure the security and privacy of medical records.
  • Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing correctional healthcare and professional ethical standards.

Professional Development:
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in primary care, correctional medicine, and relevant healthcare regulations.
  • Engage in continuous professional development activities.
  • Provide training and education to correctional staff on primary healthcare topics, as needed.


Qualifications:
  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Current and unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the state/jurisdiction where the correctional facility is located and DEA
  • Valid state identification.
  • Experience in primary care, preferably with experience in correctional medicine or working with underserved populations.
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills, with the ability to manage a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a challenging and dynamic environment.
