The University of Kansas Health System, The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, is seeking an accomplished cardiovascular imaging specialist to serve as Medical Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory. This physician leader will provide strategic, clinical, operational, educational, and research leadership for one of the nation's leading cardiovascular imaging programs.
The University of Kansas Health System includes approximately 85 cardiovascular physicians across three metropolitan campuses, anchored by the University of Kansas Medical Center. The successful candidate will oversee a comprehensive, accredited echocardiography program while supporting academic initiatives that support clinical research, investigator-initiated studies, multicenter clinical trials, and innovation in structural heart imaging.
This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of multimodality cardiovascular imaging through excellence in patient care, education, research, and program development while collaborating closely with Interventional Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesiology, Electrophysiology, Heart Failure, Adult Congenital Heart Disease, and the Cardiovascular Clinical Research (CCR) enterprise.
Clinical and Academic ScopeMedical Director, Echocardiography LaboratoryProvide strategic and operational leadership for a comprehensive, accredited echocardiography laboratory across the health system.
Responsibilities:- Direct all clinical echocardiography operations, quality initiatives, accreditation, and faculty oversight.
- Oversee all echocardiographic imaging services, including transthoracic, transesophageal, stress, contrast, three-dimensional, strain, structural heart, adult congenital, perioperative, and critical care echocardiography.
- Maintain IAC accreditation and ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
- Develop standardized imaging protocols, structured reporting, and best practice guidelines across the health system.
- Improve laboratory efficiency, patient access, reporting turnaround times, and operational performance.
- Lead quality assurance, peer review, laboratory utilization, and continuous performance improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate and implement emerging imaging technologies and artificial intelligence applications.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop imaging faculty and sonographers while fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
EducationLead and participate in our educational program in cardiovascular imaging for physician faculty, sonographers, and cardiovascular trainees.
Responsibilities:- Develop imaging curricula for General Cardiology, Advanced Imaging, Structural Heart, Interventional Cardiology, and Cardiothoracic Surgery fellows.
- Provide procedural imaging instruction and simulation-based education.
- Lead imaging conferences, case reviews, and board preparation activities.
- Support sonographer education and continuing professional development.
- Mentor faculty and trainees while promoting academic scholarship.
ClinicalMaintain an active clinical practice that supports the academic mission of the department.
Responsibilities:- Comprehensive echocardiography interpretation
- Structural heart procedural imaging
- Participation in multidisciplinary Heart Team conferences
- Approximately 30% clinical effort devoted to inpatient consultation and ambulatory practice
- Faculty call responsibilities
Required Qualifications:- MD or DO
- Board Certification in Cardiovascular Disease
- Level III Training in Echocardiography
- Demonstrated expertise in structural heart imaging
- Eligibility for medical licensure in Kansas
- Academic credentials consistent with appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
Preferred Qualifications:- National reputation in cardiovascular imaging
- Experience directing an accredited echocardiography laboratory
- Experience establishing or directing a cardiovascular imaging core laboratory
- Leadership of multicenter clinical trials
- Record of funded research and scholarly productivity
- Demonstrated leadership within a large academic medical center
