Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Surgical Complex Specialty Physician Assistant, in collaboration with the physician/medical director, you will assume clinical responsibility for tasks performed within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice. This includes taking patient's history, performing physical examinations, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, establishing diagnosis, and providing care and management for various illnesses and disease prevention.Every day, you may assist in patient admission, transfer, or discharge. You will make appropriate referrals to specialists and community agencies, and participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to develop patient-centered plans. In addition to general NP duties, you will provide specialized care and management for complex surgical patients, often in critical care units, respond to acute situations in the periprocedural period, and collaborate with surgical teams to optimize outcomes.To be successful in your role, you will strategically deliver comprehensive, highly specialized patient care for complex surgical cases, assuming clinical responsibility for assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients within the Physician Assistant's scope. You will demonstrate exceptional clinical expertise in performing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, responding to acute situations, and collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team to develop patient-centered plans, while actively participating in quality assurance and ensuring seamless care coordination throughout the surgical journey.

Responsible for performing patient evaluations, reviewing pretreatment teaching, recommending therapeutic intervention, counseling patients and families and collaborating with appropriate physicians to provide other appropriate direct care interventions within the scope of practice for physician assistants in collaboration with the Sr. Director of Transplant Services.

  • Takes 1st call afterhours and weekends included for all patients on service (ICU/Floor/Tele and after hours for answering service for clinic patients). One day/week call after 5pm is the minimum requirement of the position. One weekend call per/month which will include patient rounding or other patient care needs identified (e.g. admissions/discharges) by the on-call attending will begin at 5pm on Friday- 8am on Monday).
  • As necessary performs and documents; admissions, discharges, History/Physicals and Progress Notes. Coordinate care with care management, facilitating transfers and discharges. Participates in patient education and counseling.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary rounding with physicians and RN coordinators daily; 1-2 X/day.
  • Coordinates care of lung transplant clinic patients with RN Transplant Coordinators. Provides care for scheduled lung transplant (pre/post) patients in the clinic. Coordinates care of lung transplant clinic patients with RN Transplant Coordinators.
  • Participates in department reviews and academic activity, including department meetings and conferences. Participates in Transplant quality and workgroups/council.
  • Ensures compliance/regulations for billing and documentation and other standards.
