Job Summary
About this role:
The malignant hematology oncology PA provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses, and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of medical malignant hematology oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients. The malignant hematology oncology PA will assist in providing continuity support in the event of a patient admission in order to advance the plan of care.
In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the malignant hematology oncology PA serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The hematology oncology PA will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team.
-Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
-Completes high quality and timely documentation.
- Participates in scheduled encounters, maintains capacity for urgent care for the evaluation for complex symptom evaluation and management and improves access for newly diagnosed hematology oncology patients.
-Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Ensues appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely manner through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team
- Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.
- Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care across the trajectory of illness.
-Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings across the trajectory of illness
-Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
-Facilitates and co-manages communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.
-Orders medications and writes prescriptions, inclusive of standard of care antineoplastics and oncologic investigational new drugs according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
-Participates in research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
- Appreciates the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction and the risk for complex drug interactions.

-Patient Care Organization
1. Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population.
2. Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures appropriate to patient needs.
3. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patients' clinical problems and health care needs.
4. Arranges for appropriate plan of care and follow-up based on outcome of diagnostic, lab, and physical assessment findings.
5. Performs laboratory tests appropriate for specific patient population.
6. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
7. Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
8. Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects cost effective management of time, available human resources, supplies, and equipment.
9. Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians and other health care professionals.
10. Incorporates the concepts of health maintenance, prevention, and promotion into daily practice through patient education and counseling.
11. Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.

-Quality of Care
1. Assists in the development, implementation and revision of physician assistant guidelines and monitoring requirements for prescription writing in collaboration with their physician colleagues and Director.
2. Evaluates outcomes of own patients' care and makes necessary revisions in care plans.
3. Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
4. Participates in departmental and organization quality improvement program.
5. Utilizes quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patient care.

-Coordination
1. Demonstrates appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.
2. Serves on appropriate Hospital Committees and assumes responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.

-Budget
1. Participates in setting productivity metrics and in cost-effective management of personnel, time, supplies, and equipment in their area.
2. Collaborates with the Director in the recommendation of appropriate staffing patterns for their clinical areas.

-Personnel Management
1. Participates in selection process of new employees in group or team practice as requested.
2. Provides input into evaluation of other staff as appropriate.

-Education
1. Acts as preceptor for students and staff as requested.
2. Participates in orientation of new staff.
3. Participates in Departmental and organization continuing education programs.
4. Identifies own learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.
5. Educates lay and/or professional groups through lectures, papers, publications, and educational materials.

-Planning
1. Develops annual objectives and reviews with Director and collaborating providers at time of performance review and at appropriate intervals. Completes annual credentialing process through the Hospital credentialing program.
2. Assists in determining, evaluating, and/or implementing clinical area goals and objectives.
3. Maintains interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicating information for patient care and operation of practice.
4. Maintains current knowledge of legislation that may affect the health care delivery system.
5. Identifies and integrates patient population and/or disease state in programmatic goals and objectives.

-Research
1. Participates in research at a level consistent with educational background and experience.
2. Maintains understanding of current research of others in related clinical areas through review of relevant publications.
3. Participates in grant writing as appropriate.

-Supervisory Responsibilities
1. May assume responsibility for providing direction to designated personnel.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure
  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required.
  • Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No.
  • DEA registration required and current PA license to practice in Massachusetts required.


Experience
  • Minimum 5 years' current licensed Physician Assistant experience caring for an Oncology focused patient population required.
  • Clinical Physician Assistant experience in an ambulatory practice managing a malignant hematologic oncology focused patient population required.
  • Clinical experience ordering and/or administering antineoplastics, immunotherapies, and cellular therapy products preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency with Epic EMR.
  • Telemedicine experience.
  • Strong managerial and leadership presence and ability to provide & direct feedback and guidance to staff preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Results-oriented and exhibits a strong attention to detail.
  • Expert clinical judgment skills to function in the independent role.
  • Procedural proficiency for hematologic oncologic specific procedures including bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, and skin biopsies.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients' families, staff, and community health workers.
  • Ability to work with frequent stress resulting from busy clinical settings and changing organizational climate.
  • Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of position.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
