Summary
The Pharmacist in this position will primarily support the operational and fulfillment functions of the Oncology Specialty Pharmacy at the Rush Cancer Center Pharmacy. Responsibilities include verification and dispensing of oral oncology and supportive care medications, oversight of prescription fulfillment workflows, inventory management activities, and ensuring safe, efficient medication distribution to patients. This pharmacist will work closely with fulfillment pharmacy technicians and other members of the specialty pharmacy team to support timely medication access and delivery. Clinical responsibilities, including medication counseling, pharmacotherapy review, and provider support, may be assigned as operational needs permit. Responsibilities
- Review and verify specialty pharmacy prescriptions for accuracy, completeness, therapeutic appropriateness, dosing, potential drug interactions, allergies, contraindications, and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Support fulfillment operations for oral oncology and supportive care medications, ensuring timely and accurate dispensing, preparation, and distribution of patient-specific prescriptions.
- Collaborate with fulfillment pharmacy technicians to maintain efficient workflow and resolve operational issues impacting prescription processing, dispensing, and medication delivery.
- Assist with inventory management activities, including monitoring inventory levels, evaluating medication utilization trends, managing medication shortages, identifying expiring product, and supporting inventory accuracy initiatives.
- Oversee medication storage and handling processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and manufacturer requirements, including management of specialty and limited-distribution medications.
- Clarify prescription orders when necessary, through direct and timely communication with prescribers or designated practitioners.
- Provide drug information and medication-related recommendations to providers, nursing staff, patients, caregivers, and pharmacy team members as appropriate.
- Perform patient counseling and education regarding oral oncology therapies, supportive care medications, adherence strategies, adverse effect management, and safe medication handling as operational workload permits.
- Document clinical interventions, medication therapy recommendations, and patient care activities in accordance with departmental and organizational standards.
- Uphold departmental, specialty pharmacy, and institutional policies and procedures while supporting quality, safety, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
- Serve as a resource to fulfillment pharmacy technicians and assist with workflow prioritization and daily operational coordination when needed.
- Assist with scheduling adjustments and operational coverage needs to maintain continuity of pharmacy services.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement projects, accreditation activities, workflow optimization efforts, and other initiatives that support specialty pharmacy growth and excellence.
- Maintain competency in specialty pharmacy operations, oral oncology therapies, payer requirements, prior authorization processes, and specialty pharmacy best practices.

- One year of hospital pharmacy experience.
