Full Job Description
  • Position Summary
    • The staff pharmacist, under the auspices of the Corporate Director of Pharmacy, is responsible for providing clinical support and distribution services in coordination with the medical staff, nursing, and ancillary services. The primary objective is to provide quality and cost-effective drug therapy to the patient.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Work Experience
      • Recent hospital pharmacist experience preferred. Previous pharmacist work experience in a non-hospital setting will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
    • Education
      • B.S. degree in Pharmacy required.
      • Doctor of Pharmacy degree and/or completion of a residency program preferred.
    • Certifications/Licensure
      • Currently licensed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky by the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy required. If currently licensed in a State other than Kentucky, must obtain licensure by the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy within 3 months of hire or placement.

      • Interprets and evaluates physician orders in order to prepare, calculate, and dispense appropriate medication dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient treatment in accordance with applicable state and federal pharmacy laws, Medical Staff By-Laws, and within the standards of the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
      • Compounds and supervises compounding of medications for use.
      • Dispenses medications accurately and on time. Documentation is complete and accurate.
      • Maintains records on controlled substances.
      • Assists in supervision of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy buyer, secretary, interns, and students in distributive functions and department operations.
      • Follows established procedures and guidelines as outlined in the Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Book for dispensing of medications.
      • Reviews, maintains, and screens patient medication records and profiles for allergies, drug/drug and drug/nutrient interactions, and therapeutic duplications while entering orders and/or verifying patient medications.
      • Communicates with the medical staff, nurses, and other healthcare professionals for prompt clarification of orders that are unclear, illegible, or incomplete and to recommend alternatives for inappropriate therapy of non-formulary items.
      • Demonstrates the ability to identify and address the needs of different patient age groups and to effectively communicate with those patients.
      • Responsible for monitoring medication schedules in relation to the patient's ability to metabolize and eliminate specific drug compounds (i.e. aminoglycoside kinetics, etc.).
      • Provides on-site drug information of all types to medical, nursing, or other professional staff.
      • Serves as an educator of hospital staff and students by preparation of clinical conferences and/or "inservices".
      • Provides discharge counseling about medications to patients when requested or required per pharmacy law.
      • Maintains a neat, clean work environment.
      • Follows safety and infection control policies of the pharmacy and other hospital and department policies and procedures.
      • Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of equipment necessary to perform job function.
      • Assists in the orientation of new personnel and students.
