Job Summary

The Department of Oral Health Science in the College of Dentistry is seeking an innovative leader to serve as our Orthodontic Training Program Director with a tenure eligible Assistant, Associate or Full Professor appointment within the College. The Program Director will serve under the Division Chief of Orthodontics and will be responsible for providing guidance and leadership for the graduate training program within the Division. They will assure that all Commission on Dental Accreditation standards (CODA) will be appropriately maintained to allow full accreditation of the program. In addition, the Program Director will be responsible for overseeing the academic and clinical training for all graduate students in the program and will work in collaboration with staff members that have their main functions related to the graduate training program.

The successful candidate will have completed a CODA approved orthodontic graduate program, be certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and eligible for academic dental license from the Kentucky Board of Dentistry. Ideal candidates would have a record of excellence in dental education, research, mentoring students and have a clear vision for the program.

Responsibilities

The Distribution of Effort (DOE) for this position will include; 40-45% teaching, 20% administration, 15% research/scholarship /creative activities, 20% patient care services, and 5% personal/professional development.

Specific duties include:

  • Administration
    • Communications
      • Serve as liaison between the graduate orthodontic faculty in the Division and the Division Chief.
      • Serve as a liaison between the Graduate Orthodontic Training Program and the other Graduate Training Programs in the College.
      • Represent the Program at the Program Directors Meeting, MS Oversight Meetings, and national educators' meetings.
      • Oversee the graduate students' progress in their independent research efforts leading to the Master of Science Degree.
      • Work with the Director of Graduate Studies to assure all academic policies and procedures are completed in agreement with the University of Kentucky Graduate School.
    • Quality Assurance
      • Oversee the curriculum for the graduate training program making sure that it is maintained at the highest level and consistent with CODA guidelines and the College Curriculum Management Plan.
      • Formulation of the graduate students daily, weekly, monthly and yearly program seminars, conferences, rotations and clinic schedules and evaluations.
      • Oversee CODA Accreditation Self-study of the Program.
    • Personnel Management
      • Work with the Division Chief to assure that there is adequate faculty to accomplish the educational goals as described by CODA
      • Take a proactive role in recruiting.
      • Assist in monitoring and evaluating Division faculty members' performance as it relates to teach in the graduate training program.
      • Oversee supervision of staff associates directly involved with the graduate training program.
      • Assist the Division Chief in mentoring junior faculty in their professional development.
    • Planning
      • Assist the Division Chief in budget processes and financial accountability
      • Oversee the creation of the Divisional strategic plans as it related to the orthodontic graduate training program.
    • Teaching
      • Mentoring junior faculty
      • Provide instruction to predoctoral and/or graduate students/residents as indicated and needed to fulfill the mission of the Division.
    • Research
      • Develop a focus area of scholarly activity with measurable productivity.
    • Service
      • Provide patient care or other service activities related to the Division's mission.
      • Serve on appropriate College and University committees.
      • Serve on State, National and/or international committees (e.g., editorial boards, board certification committees, etc.)
