Full Job Description

The Engineer - 3rd Class is a licensed engineering professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems within a facility.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of building infrastructure and Central Plant equipment.

The Engineer - 3rd Class possesses extensive technical knowledge of boilers, steam and hot water systems, HVAC equipment, electrical systems, and associated mechanical equipment. Working with a high degree of independence, the Engineer performs preventive and corrective maintenance, responds to equipment failures, and ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations, codes, and operational standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain Central Plant equipment and building systems.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on boilers, HVAC systems, pumps, motors, generators, and electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues and implement effective repair solutions.
  • Monitor system performance to ensure efficient and uninterrupted facility operations.
  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and systems to identify maintenance needs and potential failures.
  • Respond to equipment malfunctions, alarms, and emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, operating logs, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, environmental regulations, and facility policies.
  • Coordinate with facility management, contractors, and vendors as required to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with equipment upgrades, renovations, and capital improvement projects.
  • Support the training and development of less experienced engineering staff as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Active Secret Security Clearance (required).
  • Valid District of Columbia 3rd Class Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer License (required).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Engineering Services, facilities engineering, building operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining boilers, HVAC systems, and complex building mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety regulations, codes, and industry standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in government, mission-critical, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, or large commercial facilities.
  • Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Experience with steam distribution systems, chilled water systems, and emergency power systems.

Compensation Details:

$97,000-$105,000
