Psychiatry Residency Program Director - Joint Civilian-Military Training Program

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio is seeking a full-time, open-rank faculty to serve as a Psychiatry Residency Program Director.
Position Summary
The Residency Program Director leads a distinct, integrated joint civilian-military Psychiatry training program comprised of 50% civilian and 50% active-duty U.S. Air Force residents. This role will have 70% protected administrative time and 30% clinical/academic practice. Reporting to the Vice-Chair for Education, the Director oversees curriculum, compliance, and clinical rotations across the primary academic center, community hospitals, and outpatient clinics (CBOCs).
Key Responsibilities
• Joint Program Leadership & Compliance
• Manage all operational aspects of a combined civilian and military cohort, ensuring a seamless culture.
• Report directly to the Vice-Chair for Education on program outcomes, ACGME milestones, and strategic initiatives.
• Maintain full compliance with ACGME Psychiatry Review Committee requirements and military educational mandates.
• Oversee dual-track recruitment, coordinating civilian NRMP matching alongside the Air Force Centralized Selection Board process.
• Align educational resource allocation between academic funding and military training agreements.
Multi-Site & Outpatient Clinic Integration
• Collaborate with outpatient clinics to build longitudinal, community-facing psychiatric rotations.
• Coordinate resident placement across varied environments, including academic units, community beds, and outpatient clinics.
• Ensure equitable educational oversight and identical supervision standards for civilian and Air Force trainees at all sites.
• Appoint and mentor site directors at community hospitals and outpatient clinics to maintain curriculum alignment.
Curriculum & Subspecialty Oversight
• Supervise educational pathways and elective tracks leading into core fellowships and subspecialties:
o Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
o Geriatric Psychiatry
o Forensic Psychiatry
o Addiction Medicine
• Direct the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) to evaluate progress.
Resident Wellness & Performance
• Monitor performance metrics for a large, structurally varied cohort of civilian and active-duty military physicians.
• Address unique stressors of both populations, fostering joint wellness initiatives, peer support, and burnout prevention.
• Implement clear, compliant remediation pathways for residents requiring additional academic or professional support.
Required Qualifications
• Degree: MD or DO from an accredited institution.
• Licensure: Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and state licensure.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of active faculty experience in an ACGME-accredited Psychiatry residency.
• Demonstrated experience managing educational rotations across hospital and outpatient clinic settings
• Competency: Strong familiarity with GME frameworks and medical education systems.
