Description

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Nurse Supervisor to work at the Employee Health Clinic. This position will l ead and manage direct care nursing functions of an inpatient unit or ambulatory clinic to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs, and research programs of clinical departments.

Duties to include

  • Human Resource Management
  • Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff. Develop and manage the performance of staff as directed. May complete performance appraisals on assigned staff. Ensure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations. Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
  • Financial Management
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit or clinic. Review with nurse leaders financial reports and provide insights to budget variances. Recommend budget ideas, resources, and cost containment strategies.
  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction
  • Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement. Implement and maintain standards and quality plans. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
  • Patient Care/Services Delivery
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit. Serve as a resource for patient care problems. May provide some patient care.
  • Planning & Goal Management
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Communication & Collaboration
  • Communicate with physicians, staff, and other healthcare providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic. Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
  • Education Programs
  • Provide evaluative feedback to staff members and health care students. Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
  • Research Administration
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives.


Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm or 8:30am - 5:00pm with half an hour lunch

May be required to provide on-call management support outside of regular working hours, during weekend, holidays or operational needs.

Location: UI Health Care Main Campus

Pay Grade: 5A - https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/plans

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by the date of hire is required.
  • At least three (3) years of comprehensive progressive healthcare leadership/administrative experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrate job-related experience with fostering a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment and/or otherwise demonstrate their ability to foster a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment for people from all types of backgrounds and viewpoints
