Reporting to the Nuclear Safety Manager, this role is responsible for performing nuclear safety analyses, supporting the safety basis for Aalo's nuclear facilities, and ensuring compliance with DOE nuclear safety requirements across facility design, construction, and operations.
The Nuclear Safety Analyst/Engineer will contribute to safety basis documentation, unreviewed safety question evaluations, hazard analyses, and the integration of nuclear safety requirements into day-to-day operations. You will work closely with engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to ensure that safety considerations are effectively addressed throughout the facility lifecycle. This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on the safe deployment of a first-of-a-kind microreactor.
What you'll do- Support the development, review, and maintenance of safety basis documents, including Documented Safety Analyses, Technical Safety Requirements, and supporting hazard and accident analyses.
- Perform and document Unreviewed Safety Question screenings and evaluations for proposed changes to the facility, procedures, and operations in accordance with 10 CFR 830.
- Conduct hazard identification, categorization, and analysis activities for nuclear facilities, including consequence and likelihood assessments.
- Support the classification and functional requirements definition for safety-class and safety-significant structures, systems, and components.
- Assist in the identification and evaluation of Potential Inadequacies in the Safety Analysis and the development of compensatory measures.
- Participate in facility walkdowns, design reviews, and operational assessments to verify implementation of safety basis requirements.
- Support the integration of nuclear safety requirements into facility design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
- Prepare technical reports, safety evaluations, and presentations for internal stakeholders and DOE oversight organizations.
- Contribute to the Integrated Safety Management System, including hazard identification and mitigation activities across facility operations.
- Support readiness assessments, operational readiness reviews, and other startup authorization activities as assigned.
- Maintain nuclear safety procedures and support training and qualification activities for safety basis personnel.
- Monitor and implement changes stemming from evolving DOE requirements, industry standards, and lessons learned from across the DOE complex.
- Support the safety system oversight program, including surveillance, testing, and documentation of safety-related systems.
- Coordinate with criticality safety, radiation protection, and other safety disciplines to ensure comprehensive hazard management.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of nuclear safety experience in DOE nuclear facilities, including involvement in safety basis development, review, or implementation.
- Working knowledge of safety basis processes, including DSA/TSR development, hazard analysis methodologies, and accident analysis techniques.
- Experience performing Unreviewed Safety Question screenings and evaluations in accordance with 10 CFR 830.
- Understanding of DOE nuclear safety requirements, including facility safety, quality assurance, and personnel qualification frameworks.
- Experience with nuclear facility hazard categorization and classification of safety structures, systems, and components.
- Ability to interpret and apply nuclear safety standards, regulations, and technical guidance documents to practical facility situations.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and the ability to perform independent technical assessments.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and safety evaluations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment while managing multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications- Advanced degree (M.S.) in a relevant technical discipline.
- Experience with DOE-STD-3009 methodology for Documented Safety Analysis development.
- Direct involvement in facility readiness assessments, operational readiness reviews, or startup authorization activities.
- Experience with safety system oversight activities, including surveillance and functional testing.
- Familiarity with Integrated Safety Management System implementation at DOE facilities.
- Experience across multiple DOE sites or programs, providing breadth of perspective on safety basis practices.
- Background in nuclear criticality safety or radiation protection as it relates to safety basis documentation.
- Experience with advanced reactor technologies, microreactors, or first-of-a-kind nuclear facility design.
- Familiarity with DOE nuclear facility training and qualification program requirements.
- Experience supporting interactions with DOE oversight organizations or the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
Work Environment- Combination of office and field environment at the Aalo-X campus.
- Periodic visits to operating nuclear facility areas with appropriate PPE and access controls.
- Occasional travel to DOE headquarters, other Aalo locations, or industry events as required.
What Success Looks Like- High-quality safety basis analyses and evaluations that are technically sound, clearly documented, and delivered on schedule.
- Thorough and timely USQ screenings and evaluations that enable facility changes while maintaining rigorous safety standards.
- Effective integration of nuclear safety requirements into facility design and operations, identified and resolved early in the process.
- Strong working relationships with engineering, operations, and regulatory teams built on technical credibility and responsiveness.
- Proactive identification of safety concerns and potential improvements, contributing to the continuous strengthening of Aalo's safety posture.
- Active contribution to a safety culture where nuclear safety considerations are understood and prioritized across the organization.
