Position SummaryThe Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as a member of the Hand and Upper Extremity care team within Marshall Orthopaedics, providing comprehensive patient care in both clinic and surgical settings. Practicing primarily out of Marshall University Medical Center, the APP collaborates with supervising hand surgeons and interdisciplinary staff to deliver high-quality care across the continuum, including evaluation and treatment of hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity conditions.
The role spans outpatient hand clinic, operating room first assisting, and post-operative follow-up. Occasional coverage at other Marshall Orthopaedics locations may be requested to support patient access and operational needs.
Job Responsibilities- Obtains a complete musculoskeletal history with focused hand and upper extremity examination, including motor, sensory, and vascular assessment
- Interprets diagnostic studies, including hand and upper extremity radiographs, CT, MRI, and electrodiagnostic studies, to determine appropriate treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising surgeon
- Collaborates with the hand surgeons in managing acute and chronic upper extremity conditions, including carpal tunnel and other compressive neuropathies, tendon and nerve injuries, arthritis of the hand and wrist, distal radius and hand fractures, Dupuytren contracture, and infections
- Serves as surgical first assist for hand and upper extremity procedures at Cabell Huntington Hospital and affiliated operative sites
- Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures as indicated
- Performs in-office procedures under physician direction, including joint and tendon sheath injections, aspirations, splint and cast application and removal, suture removal, wound and burn care, nail bed repair, and closure of minor lacerations
- Counsels patients regarding hand and upper extremity diagnoses, surgical and non-surgical options, and recovery expectations
- Instructs patients and families regarding medications, splinting and immobilization, post-operative care, and activity restrictions; coordinates with hand therapy on rehabilitation protocols
- Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information; posts test and examination results
- Triages patient calls and provides clinical consultation
- Manages pre-operative and post-operative patient care
- Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations
- Performs related work as required
EducationCompletion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
ExperienceOne year of related clinical experience preferred; hand, orthopaedic, plastic surgery, or surgical first assist experience preferred but not required
License/RegistrationValid West Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant required, with prescriptive authority and DEA registration as applicable. National certification (ANCC/AANP or NCCPA) and current BLS certification required
