Full Job Description
The Neurosurgeon will work with other members of Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide clinical services, and is expected to participate in the appropriate team activities with the objective of providing a high standard of clinical practice and clinical expertise, while contributing to the provision of efficient and effective Neurological services at Semmes Murphey Clinic. The Neurosurgeon will perform surgeries on the brain, spine and peripheral nerves, as well as analyze test results and decide what treatment and/or procedure will provide the best inpatient and outpatient care for Neurosurgery patients.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive and problem focused histories and physical examinations using medical instruments and equipment, ascertaining symptoms indicative of neurological disorders
  • Interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests using CAT scans, MRI's, EEG's, myleograms, bone scans and other radiographic studies, as well as perform diagnostic procedures, including biopsies, cerebral angiograms, lumbar punctures, ventriculostomies to develop a treatment plan for neurosurgical conditions
  • Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions where appropriate
  • Treat and operate on patients with diseases/conditions of the brain, central nervous system and peripheral nerves
  • Prescribe medications and recommended dietary and physical activity programs for a post-operative recovery
  • Hospital duties to include consultations, admissions and provision of treatment and therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, operative reports, discharge planning and discharge summaries
  • Assist in the planning of Neurosurgery services at SMC and maintain a high standard of integrated patient care in Neurosurgery Service
  • Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, as appropriate
  • Assist in the development of junior medical officers and other staff in training, where required


Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Complete a degree from an accredited school of medicine
  • Complete an American College of Graduate Medical Education accredited program in neurosurgery
  • Pass written exam prior to completion of residency (Board Eligible)
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery within the time allowed after completion of Residency/Fellowship
  • Maintain a controlled drug prescription certificate
  • Maintain licensure in the state practicing
