This is a unique leadership opportunity to oversee a nationally recognized inpatient rehabilitation program, recognized by both U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek, as it transitions from an acute care hospital-based rehabilitation unit to a freestanding inpatient rehabilitation model in October 2027. The Medical Director will provide strategic, operational, and clinical leadership while partnering with executive and physician leaders to shape the future of rehabilitation care across the health system.
The Medical Director will oversee an established inpatient rehabilitation unit with an average daily census of 15-20 patients, a robust outpatient neurorehabilitation practice, acute-care rehabilitation consultation services, and a dedicated rehabilitation medicine team within the Swedish Neuroscience Institute at the Cherry Hill campus.
Position Highlights:
- Medical Director leadership role within a nationally recognized rehabilitation program.
- Lead the transition from an acute hospital-based Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) to a freestanding rehabilitation model.
- Oversight of: Inpatient rehabilitation services (average daily census 15-20 patients), Established outpatient PM&R practice (~30% of clinical activity), 0.5 FTE consult physiatrist providing acute-care rehabilitation consultations
- Approximately 70% inpatient / 30% outpatient clinical practice.
- Support and collaboration with multidisciplinary programs including the ALS Clinic and Neuro Rehabilitation Concussion Clinic.
- Strong interdisciplinary support including rehabilitation nursing, therapy, social work, care coordination, and rehabilitation administration.
- Integrated within the renowned Swedish Neuroscience Institute, serving patients with complex neurologic and rehabilitation needs throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Leadership Responsibilities:
Medical Director
- Provide clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for inpatient rehabilitation and neurorehabilitation services.
- Serve as Chair of the ARU Quality Oversight Committee, leading quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, functional outcomes, length of stay, patient experience, and hospital readmission reduction.
- Ensure compliance with CMS, Joint Commission, CARF, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Partner with hospital, rehabilitation, and neurosciences leadership on program development, quality initiatives, growth opportunities, and strategic planning.
- Function as a key member of the rehabilitation leadership triad alongside the ARU Nurse Manager and Regional Therapy Director, supporting operational excellence and long-term program success.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and patient-centered care.
- Participate in physician recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, professional development, and retention efforts.
- Develop and maintain physician coverage schedules and call calendars for inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and consultative rehabilitation services.
- Ensure consistent physician staffing and 365-day coverage to support uninterrupted patient care.
- Collaborate with physician colleagues and administrative leadership to optimize provider staffing, productivity, access, and workforce sustainability.
Program Transition Leadership
- Serve as physician champion for the development and implementation of a freestanding rehabilitation model.
- Provide medical leadership for rehabilitation program planning associated with the Cherry Hill campus transition and future inpatient rehabilitation initiatives.
- Assist in program design, clinical workflows, operational planning, and service-line development.
- Strengthen referral relationships with neuroscience, stroke, neurosurgery, trauma, hospital medicine, and community physician partners.
- Expand access to specialized neurorehabilitation and complex rehabilitation services throughout the region.
- Support initiatives that enhance hospital throughput, bed utilization, and seamless transitions across the continuum of care.
Qualifications:
Required
- MD or DO degree.
- Board Certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
- Washington State medical license or eligibility.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in inpatient rehabilitation, physician administration, or hospital-based clinical leadership.
- Expertise in interdisciplinary rehabilitation care delivery.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and physician leadership skills.
Preferred
- Prior IRF Medical Director or Associate Medical Director experience.
- Experience practicing in and/or leading a freestanding rehabilitation hospital.
- Experience with CARF accreditation, CMS compliance, and rehabilitation quality metrics.
- Experience managing physician scheduling, call coverage, and operational workflows.
- Experience leading rehabilitation program growth, facility transitions, or new rehabilitation program development.
- Strong interest and expertise in neurorehabilitation and neuroscience populations.

- Compensation range: $309,842 - $362,820 annually
