ResponsibilitiesThe Technology Integration (TI) Group within NSD is seeking an experienced National Security Specialist to support complex national security programs and technical projects. Our teams integrate science, technology, systems engineering, security expertise, and operational experience to develop and deploy practical solutions that address real-world mission needs. Our group brings together technical expertise, systems integration, project execution, and operational experience to develop and deploy solutions that address real-world national security challenges. We collaborate across PNNL to provide impactful solutions that achieve real-world mission objectives in the field.
The successful candidate will provide technical and programmatic expertise across a variety of mission areas, which may include physical security, critical infrastructure protection, insider threat mitigation, counterintelligence, security systems integration, communications infrastructure, threat reduction, and other emerging national security technologies.
In this role, the candidate will be expected to:
- Provide technical expertise in the design, integration, evaluation, deployment, operation, and sustainment of physical and integrated security systems supporting national security missions.
- Conduct and support security assessments, vulnerability analyses, compliance reviews, performance evaluations, and operational assessments to identify risks, capability gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
- Translate complex federal security policies, technical requirements, and sponsor objectives into practical implementation strategies, technical solutions, procedures, and operational requirements.
- Support the planning and execution of complex technical projects, including requirements development, scope definition, schedule and budget considerations, risk management, contractor coordination, field implementation, and project closeout.
- Apply technical and operational expertise to security systems that may include access control, intrusion detection, video surveillance, communications infrastructure, networked security systems, delay/denial technologies, and other protective-system components.
- Provide technical expertise in areas such as physical security, insider threat, counterintelligence, operational security, critical infrastructure protection, and emerging security technologies.
- Develop and deliver technical training, workshops, exercises, procedures, security plans, concepts of operation, and other materials supporting mission execution and partner capacity building.
- Identify emerging threats, technical gaps, and potential R&D opportunities that could lead to new capabilities or improve existing security approaches.
- Exercise independent judgment and sound decision-making when navigating complex, sensitive, or rapidly evolving mission requirements.
This position is based in Richland, WA and requires an onsite presence. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 9 years of relevant experience -OR-
- MS/MA or higher and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-
- AA and 18 years of relevant experience -OR-
- HS/GED and 20 years of relevant experience
- Relevant experience is defined as supporting DOE/NNSA, Department of Defense, Department of State, Intelligence Community, law enforcement, or other federal national security organizations.
- Experience supporting physical security, counterintelligence, insider threat, operational security, critical infrastructure protection, or related national security missions.
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, assessing, or sustaining physical and integrated security systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated project or program management experience, including responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, risk, contractors, and stakeholder coordination.
- Experience supporting domestic and/or international security programs, including an ability to operate effectively across different cultures and operational environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to translate complex technical or policy requirements for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, mentor staff, operate independently, and exercise sound judgment in sensitive or high-consequence environments.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment- Up to 25% domestic or international travel could be required.
Additional InformationThis position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct.

- Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
- Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated.
Testing Designated PositionThis position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
