OverviewWe're looking for a UX/UI Designer to work as part of a cross-functional team delivering critical capabilities for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) program. You will have direct access to stakeholders across DHA divisions and RCM program leadership and must be competent and effective working in a military healthcare setting. In this role, you will be the primary driver of user experience (UE) and user interface (UI) design, working in tandem with product managers, full-stack developers, clinicians, and our core platform team.
This is equal parts strategic thinker, technical collaborator, and product evangelist. If you thrive in ambiguity, love building something from the ground up, and want to make a tangible difference in how warfighters receive care, we want you.
Responsibilities
- Apply an iterative, design thinking process and lens to help clients solve complex problems in strategic planning, process improvement, technology adoption and evolution, and service delivery.
- Facilitate discovery and innovation workshops for a range of stakeholders including government audiences, from senior leaders to front-line implementers using human-centered methods, tools, and best practices.
- Synthesize research and data and craft compelling stories to communicate insights that will shape service and technology innovations.
- Collaborate closely with product owners, clinicians, program leadership, and end-users to identify needs, pain points, and opportunities to improve clinical workflows and care delivery processes across the product lifecycle.
- Create wireframes, prototypes, visual designs, and interaction patterns tailored to a range of stakeholders.
- Design and deliver customized, engaging, results-oriented interventions and workshops to improve organizational and team performance.
- Apply Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles throughout the design process, including empathetic interviewing, needs assessments, co-design facilitation, and iterative refinement informed by real-world clinical feedback.
- Ensure designs align with the broader platform design system, UX philosophy, and Total Experience (TX) goals — integrating employee, customer, and user experience considerations into cohesive, end-to-end design solutions.
- Participate in usability testing, user interviews, and field validation with both clinical staff and patients, then rapidly iterate based on findings.
- Support developers during implementation and maintain design fidelity throughout the product and delivery lifecycle.
- Coordinate with product managers to facilitate stakeholder and clinical user interviews; review mockups and prototypes to promote intuitive design and user impact.
- Work with engineering teams to define features that address specific clinical and operational user problems; build complex prototypes incorporating data or new technology as needed.
- Leverage analytics and data to track, measure, and make recommendations to optimize user interfaces, clinical workflows, and overall experience.
- Support design of data capture interfaces, dashboards, and reporting tools that meet both clinical care and program performance needs.
- Contribute to the evolution of design standards, accessibility compliance (508), and scalable design systems to support the broader program and enterprise.
- Create internal style guides for HTML and CSS to ensure consistent, predictable user experiences across platforms.
- Apply Agile best practices — including backlog participation and iterative delivery — to continuously improve and shorten the software development lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Health Informatics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in UX/UI or product design, with demonstrated work in federal, healthcare, or clinical environments.
- Portfolio demonstrating enterprise application design — ideally in military, federal health, or business process improvement contexts.
- Working knowledge of Human-Centered Design (HCD) or Design Thinking processes, including needs assessments and co-design facilitation and demonstrated experience applying design thinking/HCD principles and tools to solve client challenges.
- Proficiency with design and prototyping tools including Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Strong foundation in visual design, interaction design, accessibility, and responsive layouts.
- Understanding of UX principles, patterns, and 508 compliance for secure government environments.
- Ability to analyze usage data and translate it into actionable product and design direction.
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS; basic knowledge of JavaScript.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with engineers, product owners, clinicians, and both military and civilian stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain public trust; must be a U.S. Citizen.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with Advana and War Data Platform, Preferred Databricks UI/UX development work.
- Experience with Total Experience (TX) design, integrating Employee Experience, Customer Experience, UX, and Service Design.
- Experience with Agile delivery practices including backlog management and iterative user-centered development.
- UX-related certification from Nielsen Norman Group, LUMA Institute, Human Factors International, GeneralAssembly, or equivalent.
- Active TS/SCI clearance or eligibility preferred, given program coordination with Federal intelligence partners.
