Full Job Description
About the Team:

The Microservices Digital Software Engineer - Citi Retail Services is a seasoned engineering leader who brings both the depth of a hands-on technologist and the vision of a strategic architect to one of Citi's most consequential transformation programs. This is a role defined by duality: the ability to operate with precision within a complex, high-performance current-state environment while simultaneously charting the course toward a Next Generation target architecture. The ideal candidate does not simply maintain what exists - they elevate it, challenge it, and lead the charge toward what's possible. At Citi Retail Services, this individual will be a trusted technical voice in shaping how modern Microservices, containerized applications, and hybrid cloud solutions come together to power financial products that serve millions of customers.

The successful candidate will bring 8+ years of infrastructure management and software engineering experience and will operate at the intersection of technical execution and organizational influence. They will collaborate with cross-functional engineering squads, business partners, and technology leaders to drive the design, delivery, and evolution of enterprise-grade platforms - bridging the gap between today's production systems and tomorrow's cloud-native architecture. Their contributions will be felt across the application lifecycle, from system design and architectural trade-off analysis to performance engineering in high-throughput Java environments.

This is an opportunity to leave a lasting mark on Citi Retail Services' technology landscape. The engineer who thrives here will be someone who treats architecture as a craft, infrastructure as a strategic asset, and transformation as a shared mission - bringing technical excellence, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to innovation to everything they build.

Responsibilities:
  • Accountable for executing and driving mid-size feature application design and development efforts to completion, serving as a development lead on medium-scale projects and supporting the execution of larger efforts.
  • Proficient at operating with considerable autonomy and discretion as you will significantly influence the way an application is designed and developed by providing subject specific expertise and an advanced level of understanding of application programming principles.
  • Sought after due to ability to analyze and troubleshoot coding, application performance and design challenges.
  • Capable of research in root cause of development and performance concerns as well as the resolution of defects.
  • Have a deep understanding of the technical requirements for the solutions being built.
  • Understand engineering needs including those required to build, maintain, and operate the system through all phases of its life.
  • Proficient in information modeling, data structures and algorithms.
  • Understand maintenance characteristics, runtime properties and dependencies that exist in support of your system's software. These dependencies will include but not limited to: hardware, platform, operating system, performance and load requirements, as well as contingencies with upstream and downstream systems.
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of supported main system flows and possess a comprehensive understanding of how the system and others (i.e. architecture or infrastructure) collectively integrate to contribute towards achieving business objectives. Using this expertise, assist with the development of standards for coding, testing, debugging and implementation. This will ensure application design adheres to the overall architecture blueprint.
  • Participate in design discussions as a Development Lead and as such will play the part of a key decision maker in driving design decisions. This is evidenced by your knowledge of the application code details and your experience with the technology and teams engaged.
  • Work with limited guidance, seeking guidance only as needed as the development and delivery strategy is defined; the design is not.
  • Exhibit the ability to turn complex application design into a well written application.
  • Partner with industry vendors that provide technology or user experience design components that support our Digital architecture and work with vendors on our implementation plans and roadmaps identifying partnership opportunities to increase our development velocity and our learnings.
  • Participates in the full development life cycle, identify dependencies between agile and waterfall delivery, working within broadly defined parameters, including test plan execution and software quality needs.
  • Directly impact the business by influencing strategic functional decisions through advice, counsel or provided services. This will require persuading and influencing others through strong and comprehensive communication and diplomacy skills.
  • Communicate progress, anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, identify, assess, track and mitigate issues/risks at multiple levels.
  • Recognize discordant views and take part in constructive dialog to resolve them.
  • Work across teams to optimize processes.
  • Regularly review metrics and proactively seek out new and improved mechanisms for visibility ensuring your program stays aligned with organization objectives.
  • Continuously assess development processes, test plans, and operations.
  • Work with teams to improve concurrent project delivery.
  • Streamline and/or eliminate excess process in any area of architecture, build, delivery, production operations environment, or business area where the same efforts (or issues) are repeated year-over-year.
  • Share knowledge with the team in various forums (brown bags, engineering forums etc.) and demonstrate a higher level of knowledge through industry certifications.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in infrastructure management and software engineering, with a demonstrated track record of delivering high-performance, production-grade applications at enterprise scale.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; data driven and results-oriented, with the ability to evaluate complex technical trade-offs and translate findings into clear engineering decisions.
  • Proven experience delivering software within an agile methodology, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and iterative feature releases within large cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Deep expertise in high-performance computing using Java, with experience designing and optimizing enterprise-grade, multi-threaded, and distributed applications in a Microservices architecture.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, implementing, and evolving Microservices-based architectures, with a strong grasp of application design patterns, service decomposition strategies, and API contract management.
  • Proven experience executing technology stack modernization or Next Generation platform transformation initiatives, including assessing current-state architecture, defining target-state blueprints, and driving migration execution.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, EKS) or Microsoft Azure (AKS, Functions, Cosmos DB), with demonstrated ability to architect and deploy scalable, cloud-native solutions in hybrid cloud environments.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including Java, Python 3.10+, or TypeScript, with deep experience building and maintaining enterprise-grade, high-throughput applications at scale.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes (OpenShift or Amazon EKS preferred), including designing, deploying, and troubleshooting containerized applications in production hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with integration technologies such as TIBCO, Apache Kafka, or MuleSoft, including designing event-driven and message-based architectures for high-volume, mission-critical financial services platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools including Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, or ArgoCD, with experience automating build, test, and deployment workflows at scale across large engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle, or Redis, including performance tuning, schema design, and data modeling for high-throughput transactional systems.
  • Experience implementing monitoring and observability solutions using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or Splunk, with a focus on ensuring system reliability, SLA adherence, and uptime in production environments.
  • Experience conducting architectural trade-off analysis using structured models (e.g., ATAM, ADRs), with the ability to evaluate competing design approaches and recommend solutions that balance performance, cost, and maintainability.
  • Skilled at working with third-party service providers and technology vendors to align implementation plans with strategic technology roadmaps.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders.
