Full Job Description
The Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute (ODBI) was recently launched to ignite new directions in research, education, and innovation at the intersection of Engineering and the Life Sciences. ODBI is evolving rapidly, including launching various programs and building physical and programmatic infrastructure. ODBI is seeking a Microscopy Facility Director to establish and build a state-of-the-art microscopy core facility to be housed in a custom-designed laboratory within ODBI's brand new building. The microscopy core facility is envisioned to house advanced light microscopes, with a particular focus on smart microscopy approaches for imaging, analysis and active interfacing with living cells.
The Microscopy Facility Director will work closely with members of the ODBI, Princeton, and broader communities, including other core facilities and professional scientific organizations, as well as vendors to maintain a leading capability for ODBI and our partners. The Facility Director will support cutting-edge research, towards ODBI's mission of developing technologies to probe, control, and compute with living cells and tissues. The microscopy facility is envisioned as supporting this mission through smart microscopy capabilities, which integrate AI-in-the-loop approaches in commercial and potentially custom-built microscopy platforms.
In addition to technical innovation, the Facility Director will help establish training, access/scheduling, and recharge models for the facility. The Director will train and assist student and postdoc users of the facility, helping them to design their imaging experiments (e.g. choosing microscopy modalities, sample preparation), maximize quality of imaging data, and consult on image visualization and analysis. The Director will also have the opportunity to participate in teaching activities (e.g. for students in the new Bioengineering PhD program), including the design of custom microscopy setups for specific imaging applications. When teaching, successful candidates will carry the additional part-time rank of Lecturer, and any teaching opportunities are subject to sufficient enrollments and the approval of the Dean of the Faculty. This position will be appointed at the rank of Professional Specialist.
This position is not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B visa requiring consular processing.
Candidates should have a PhD in a related field. Candidates without a PhD, but with an advanced degree may be considered if they have significant (multiple years) hands-on experience with advanced microscopy applications.
Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University.
