Salary Range: $91,000.00 to $114,000.00

The Role
Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
This requisition is for a design manager position in the Propulsion & Reactor Engineering Planning Yard responsible for the design, maintenance, overhaul and modernization of Nimitz Class and Ford Class propulsion plants. The manager will lead a group of designers responsible for the design and maintenance of Hull Outfitting (HOF) commodities supporting the operational readiness of the aircraft carrier fleet and new construction ship delivery. The primary function is development and delivery of 2D Drawings and Model Files in support of aircraft carrier new construction and Class wide maintenance and modernization efforts (ShipAlts). Commodities associated with these products may include stowage, furniture, doors, openings, non-structural bulkheads, cathodic protection, insulation, deck coverings, foundations, material, and other miscellaneous HOF deliverables. This position will establish and maintain good working relationships with Fleet, Public Shipyards, Supply Chain, NAVSEA, NNL, engineer/designer leads across departments, and NNS Waterfront Construction Engineering/Trades via email, phone, and in person meetings. The team utilizes NX, Team Center, TCViz, SAP, i2, AutoCad, Access Databases, and Microsoft Office.
Must Have
Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
or a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience.
Nice to Have
Experience leading design personnel in the design and maintenance of naval vessels. Must be able to establish and maintain good working relationships with our upstream (NAVSEA and NNL) and downstream (various shipyard departments) customers. Therefore, excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary along with experience interfacing with Engineering, US Government customers, the NNS shipbuilder, and ship maintenance activities within the Fleet and public shipyards. The manager must be able to work independently overseeing multiple commitments while reacting to changing priorities. A strong background in the areas of Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) and the CVN78 Class Product Model is preferred. Knowledge of TCViz, SAP, BOMs, i2, PREPY-1 and automated piping drawings is a plus. In addition, experience with commodity management and shipbuilding design and development processes, including Ship, Platen, and waterfront shops is helpful. Must be committed to actively leading a culturally transformative effort within their AOR.
