The solid tumor hematology oncology Physician Assistant provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations.

With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of solid tumor medical oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients.

In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the hematology oncology PA serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The hematology oncology PA will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team.

- Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
- Completes high quality and timely documentation.
- Participates in scheduled encounters, maintains capacity for urgent care for the evaluation and management of complex oncologic symptoms or treatment toxicities and improves access for newly diagnosed hematology oncology patients.
-Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Ensues appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely manner through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team
- Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with the supervising physician.
- Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care across the trajectory of illness.
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings across the trajectory of illness.
- Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
- Facilitates and co-manages communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions, inclusive of standard of care antineoplastics and oncologic investigational new drugs according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Participates in research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
- Appreciates the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction and the risk for complex drug interactions.
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research. Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 2 years' current PA experience caring for an Oncology focused patient population required. Experience in breast, GI and thoracic malignancies is strongly preferred. Experience in an ambulatory practice is strongly preferred.
• Minimum 1 year experience signing antineoplastic orders strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with Epic and EMRs strongly preferred.
• EPIC Inbasket management, telemedicine experience strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with clinical trials strongly preferred.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Demonstrated competence in specialized area.
Ability to effectively communicate clinical information, care plans, etc. to medical and lay audiences; able to educate patients and their families regarding routine and complex medical information.
Skilled in creating appropriate documentation and use of electronic medical records to consistently provide high quality and timely documentation including progress notes, sign-off notes, and discharge planning.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team; can effectively influence and lead as necessary.
Effectively uses analytical skills and problem-solving techniques in both clinical and operational matters.
Is willing to obtain procedural proficiency for medical oncology specific procedures. Training will be provided.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct reports; may indirectly provide leadership and guidance to less seasoned and new staff

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct budgetary responsibility

May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners.

-Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
-Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
