Full Job Description
Position Overview:
As a Metallic Materials Engineer at Mercury Marine, you will apply knowledge of metallic alloys, processing methods and material performance to support current products and new product introductions. In this role you will independently manage a range of materials test requests, from product and supplier component validation to failure analysis. This is a laboratory position involving approximately 75% materials testing set-up and execution and 25% report writing and meetings. You will connect laboratory findings with manufacturing history and service conditions to develop practical engineering recommendations, while building proficiency in advanced characterization techniques with in-house support from experienced specialists.
Essential Functions:
• Plan and execute materials evaluations for product validation, manufacturing support, and failure investigations of metallic components.
• Work with stakeholders to define the engineering objectives, review component history and specifications, and select appropriate test methods, priorities and acceptance criteria while balancing cost and turnaround time.
• Conduct failure investigations using an extensive suite of materials laboratory techniques to identify failure mechanisms and contributing factors.
• Apply and develop proficiency in scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), as appropriate to the investigation, with guidance on advanced operation and interpretation.
• Provide material and processing recommendations for aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, brass and bronze alloys, relating composition, microstructure and processing history to component requirements and performance.
• Collaborate with design engineering, manufacturing, supplier quality and purchasing to investigate material or process concerns, evaluate corrective actions, and collect technical evidence supporting new materials and processes.
• Document test methods, results, conclusions and recommendations in clear, concise and timely reports, distinguishing supported findings from hypotheses and identifying limitations or additional testing needs.
• As needed, present the results of your work to cross-functional internal stakeholders, and to representatives of the external supply chain.
• Safely operate assigned materials laboratory equipment within established training and procedures; perform routine equipment checks, calibration and basic maintenance as qualified, and coordinate specialized testing when needed.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or related field required.
• 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in metallic materials, metallurgy or manufacturing, including hands-on laboratory testing, materials evaluation and experience contributing to failure investigations.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Deeper practical experience in at least one manufacturing process or product area including familiarity with process controls, typical defects and their effects on component performance.
• Hands-on exposure to SEM/EDS and/or XRD, including sample preparation, data acquisition or interpretation in support of materials characterization or failure analysis.
• Experience connecting laboratory findings with production or supplier process information to support root-cause investigations and verification of corrective actions.
The anticipated pay range for this position is $73,600 - $117,900 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus program. At Brunswick, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate's qualifications and the business context.
This position is eligible to participate in Brunswick's comprehensive and high-quality benefits offerings, including medical, dental, vision, paid vacation, 401k (up to 4% match), Health Savings Account (with company contribution), wellbeing program, product purchase discounts and much more.
