Job Description

The UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute and the UAB Department of Medicine seek the next Medicine Co-Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Institute (CTI). The Co-Directorprovides strategic, clinical, and academic leadership to advance the Institute's mission across patient care, research, and education. In partnership with the Surgery Co-Director and institutional leadership, the role ensures alignment with institutional priorities while fostering innovation, growth, and excellence in transplant services.

Strategic Leadership & Governance
• Co-lead the vision, mission, and strategic plan for the CTI and oversee execution across all programs
• Serve as Co-Chair of the CTI Leadership Committee and contribute to Institute-wide strategic direction and innovation
• Provide regular updates to the CTI Oversight Committee and serve in a leadership advisory capacity
• Partner with senior UAB Health System and UAB Heersink School of Medicine leadership to align CTI priorities with institutional goals

Clinical & Program Oversight
• Provide oversight of clinical programs to ensure excellence in transplant patient care, outcomes, and program growth
• Support program directors in achieving performance, quality, and operational goals across organ programs
• Guide development and implementation of new transplant programs and expansion initiatives
• Ensure effective management of clinical operations, productivity, and resource utilization

Research & Academic Mission
• Oversee and promote transplant-related research initiatives, fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Support faculty development, education, and scholarly activity across the CTI
• Advance national reputation through academic contributions, presentations, and publications

Quality, Compliance & Operations
• Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and transplant compliance standards
• Oversee quality improvement, patient safety, and performance benchmarking initiatives
• Provide leadership in budget management, financial stewardship, and operational efficiency
• Maintain alignment with institutional policies and governing bodies (e.g., SOM, health system)

Collaboration & External Engagement
• Foster multidisciplinary collaboration across departments, divisions, and partner organizations
• Represent the CTI regionally and nationally to enhance visibility and reputation
• Support and champion philanthropic efforts benefiting transplant programs

Reporting Relationships
• Works in dyad leadership model with Surgical Co-Director
• Reports to the Chief Physician Executive, with accountability to both the Senior Vice President and Dean of the Heersink School of Medicine and to the Chief Executive Officer of UAB Health System
