The Department of Medicine at Denver Health (DH) is recruiting a Medical Director of Occupational Medicine to join our team.
The team leader is responsible for direct oversight of a clinical team and all the clinical (licensed) providers on staff. This position provides outpatient care for Denver Health employees, the City and County of Denver and others. The Center for Occupational Safety & Health (COSH) is an AOEC member clinic. The integration between DH and UCSPH includes a shared residency programas well as an ACGME-accredited fellowship. Our provider team consists of an equivalent of 2.4 FTE providers, 1.0 FTE physical therapists, one chiropractor, and the normal compliment of allied and support staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is 0.2 FTE administrative, and the remaining FTE is clinical time performing direct patient care. The percentages assigned here are based on 1.0 FTE. If the role is less than 1.0, then clinic time is adjusted down with administrative roles remaining at 0.2 FTE. Administrative work must be done on site when necessary to maintain minimum staffing in the clinic and oversight of APPs and residents.
- 20%- Direct oversight over physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, students, chiropractors, and physical therapists.
- 40%- Maintains active occupational medicine practice in discipline.
- 5%- Participate in clinical quality initiatives focused on improving the patient experience, patient safety clinical outcomes, enhancing systems to assure timeliness and efficiency and assuring quality while maintaining fiscal responsibility
- 5%- Works with Director of Service in oversight of operations of the clinical team, including productivity, quality of care, patient experience and staff / provider engagement.
- 5%- Monitors and aligns performance with Denver Health strategic pillars.
- 5%- Assists in recruiting clinical professionals.
- 5%- Collaborates with risk management for major clients (currently Denver Health and the City of Denver) to detect trends in injuries and develop best practices according to the states medical treatment guidelines for Workers Compensation
- 15%- Oversees Occupational Health role and collaborates across departments in multi-departmental ventures such as Tuberculosis surveillance for high exposure positions, Latent TB surveillance of employees, Hazardous materials Emergency Response Team readiness, High Risk Infection Team vaccination protocols and administration, and relations with City and County of Denver on Operating Agreement content.
Education and Experience
1.Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited school: required.
2.Board Eligible/Certified in Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Sports Medicine, Emergency medicine, or other specialty related to occupational health: required
3. Level II Certification at time of hire is required.
4. Additional experience in leadership and management is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the Colorado Workers Compensation Medical treatment guidelines.Able to effectively manage and direct medical provider support activities while providing quality medical care. Able to receive detailed information through oral communications, express or exchange ideas by verbal communications. Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
Education:
- Doctorate Degree Required
- Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Board Eligible/Certified in Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Sports Medicine, Emergency medicine, or other specialty related to occupational health. Required
- Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program CO Division of Workers compensation. Required
Work Experience:
- 3 years occupational health clinical experience with demonstrated leadership qualities and evidence of leading initiatives at the clinic level, or oversight of advanced practice providers. Required and
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and interest in multi-disciplinary ambulatory care, ability to work in teams and motivate physicians and other providers to improve quality, patient experience and operational efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with a wide variety staff and as well as administration.
- Possess critical thinking, analytical and teaching/coaching skills.
- Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff while providing quality medical care, able to analyze, interpret and act upon relevant clinical and financial data that pertain to the practice.
- Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
- Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
- Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to accept and implement change.
- Demonstrated history of positive collegial relations with colleagues, support staff, providers, administrators and patients.
- Computer skills required.
