Position Overview:

The Mechanical Engineering Architect will report to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering Architecture. You will provide technical mechanical oversight at our factory in Lexington, NC. You will join a team of technical architects in the Coach rail vehicle mechanical design, developing customized solutions from our product portfolio to meet customer and regulatory requirements.

What your day-to-day will look like:

Leadership & Project Execution
• Technically lead cross-functional engineering teams in developing rail vehicle products and deliverables
• Manage execution from engineering through procurement, manufacturing, testing, and warranty
• Foster a collaborative culture that promotes efficiency and innovation

Technical Architecture & Design
• Develop cost-optimized vehicle architectures using standardized module kits and platform components
• Ensure full system integration into design packages and oversee mechanical integration
• Define system-independent technical interfaces and vehicle-level requirements
• Specify technical requirements and target costs for subsystems

Documentation & Compliance
• Compile specifications, CDRLs, and Design Review Documentation
• Prepare technical bid documents and support proposal development
• Ensure compliance with customer requirements and scope of work

Coordination & Representation
• Coordinate mechanical design activities across rail platforms for standardization
• Act as technical representative in customer design meetings
• Support technical risk management and verification at the vehicle level
• Collaborate with Technical Bid Managers, Technical Managers, and Validation Managers

Mentorship
• Provide technical mentorship to the Mechanical Engineering team and junior engineers

Travel: some travel may be expected

To thrive in this role, you have:
• Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field + 8 years of experience, MS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field + 5 years of experience
• Demonstrated leadership with mechanical engineering teams
• Full project lifecycle experience (engineering, procurement, manufacturing, testing, warranty)
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship

What will make you stand out:
• MS degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Rolling stock engineering experience with rail vehicle platforms
• Working knowledge of railway design standards: AAR Section M, APTA, ASME, PRIIA, and Amtrak specifications
• Experience with Coach and other Rail systems

Candidates should be willing to work in non-climate-controlled environments and inclement weather if required or if applicable.

The pay range for this position is $124,542 - $146,370 annually with a target incentive of 10% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
