Position SummaryUltra Maritime is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead a team of mechanical engineers supporting the design, development, testing, production, and sustainment of advanced maritime defense products.
The Mechanical Engineering Manager will provide both technical and people leadership, assigning work, establishing priorities, monitoring team performance, and ensuring engineering activities support business and program objectives. This position will manage engineering projects throughout their lifecycle while working closely with program management, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, systems engineering, electrical engineering, and other functional organizations.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong mechanical engineer who can effectively lead a team, manage competing priorities, develop engineering talent, and drive projects to successful completion while maintaining cost, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
Job DescriptionKey Responsibilities- Lead a small-to-medium sized team of Mechanical Engineers by assigning responsibilities and coordinating daily engineering activities.
- Provide technical direction and mentoring to engineers and technicians in the design, development, analysis, testing, and production support of mechanical systems and components.
- Manage engineering projects and technical work packages throughout the product lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, production, and sustainment.
- Establish priorities and allocate engineering resources to meet program schedules, customer requirements, and business objectives.
- Monitor team performance, workload, project status, and technical deliverables to ensure commitments are met.
- Develop engineering solutions to complex technical problems while considering cost, schedule, quality, manufacturability, reliability, and performance.
- Review and approve engineering designs, drawings, specifications, analyses, test plans, and technical reports as appropriate.
- Support prototype development, qualification testing, failure investigations, and product improvement activities.
- Lead or support root cause analysis and corrective action for design, manufacturing, supplier, and field issues.
- Support staffing plans, resource projections, recruiting, and development of the Mechanical Engineering organization.
- Provide performance feedback, coaching, and development opportunities for engineering personnel.
- Participate in hiring, promotion, and disciplinary action recommendations in accordance with company policies.
- Communicate technical and program status to senior management and participate in design reviews, program reviews, and customer meetings.
- Support supplier and customer engagements, including occasional travel for testing, supplier meetings, and program activities.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 9+ years of relevant engineering experience within a complex engineering environment.
- 3+ years of engineering leadership or supervisory experience, including responsibility for assigning work, mentoring engineers, or leading technical teams.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, engineering analysis, manufacturing processes, and product development.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to address complex technical and organizational issues.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance; security clearances are granted to U.S. Citizens.
- Familiarity with configuration management and engineering change processes.
- Ability to travel up to 15% for testing, supplier meetings, customer meetings, and other business needs.
Desired Skills- Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or other 3D CAD systems.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, welding, composites, and additive manufacturing.
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DfM) and Design for Assembly (DfA).
- Experience with PFMEA, work instructions, manufacturing documentation, and production support.
- Experience with prototype development and environmental or qualification testing.
- Experience supporting DoD or U.S. Navy programs.
- Experience developing engineering staffing plans, resource requirements, and project schedules.
