Full Job Description
HDR is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Power Generation team. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, IPP, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors. Primary duties typically involve coordination with the project mechanical team, coordination with other engineering disciplines, monitoring and communication of project status, and providing mechanical engineering support for detailed design and owner's engineer projects on both a technical and contractual level. You will be supporting projects involving traditional generation technologies (fossil fired engines /turbines / boilers) as well as renewables (solar / wind) and energy storage. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with utility-scale power generation systems and equipment, and proven ability to plan, schedule, and lead design projects. Typical deliverables developed by this individual and/or their team include construction drawings, bid specifications, pipe stress analyses, mechanical equipment sizing calculations, technical memos, bid evaluations, code reviews, feasibility studies, reports and cost estimates. Experience with pipe stress analysis, simple cycle, combined cycle, distributed generation, RICE, CHP, and renewables projects involving solar, wind and battery energy store is a plus. Project roles will vary based on the size and type of the project, as well as the capabilities, experience, and preferred focus of the engineer. Roles will typically consist of lead mechanical engineer and project engineering manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines. Communication, leadership, and organizational skills as needed to lead a team of engineers, EITs and/or designers is required. The position will require travel for site surveys, technical conferences, client meetings and monitoring of construction. Travel is typically around than 10%. Preferred Qualifications
  • Requires a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas or ability to obtain reciprocity
  • The candidate must be able to coordinate their work with others and have the ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Long-term desire and drive to be involved in leadership and/or operations positions is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Willing to work with project teams across various HDR offices nationwide.
  • Willing to mentor less experienced engineers and EITs.
  • Proficient at working within an established schedule and budget
  • Ability to travel, on occasion

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
