If you have spent time inside a Caterpillar G3600, tearing one down, finding out why it failed, and working out how to keep the next one from failing, this role is built for you.
As a Mechanical Engineer IV at Cooper Machinery Services, you will be the technical authority on G3600 reconditioning. You will lead failure analysis, shape R&D, and turn what you learn from field data and physical inspection into better procedures, drawings, and BOMs. You will report to the Director of Engineering for Engines, Turbochargers, Automation, and R&D, work closely with Sales, Production, and Quality, and mentor engineers earlier in their careers.
What You Will Do- Serve as the technical resource for Caterpillar G3600 engine work, guiding reconditioning scope, component disposition, and customer technical questions
- Lead and support G3600 failure analysis, including physical inspection, root-cause determination, and documented corrective and preventive recommendations
- Support R&D on G3600 reconditioning and aftermarket improvements, including design, material, and process changes, test planning, and validation
- Evaluate G3600 performance by reviewing test and operating data against OEM and customer specifications
- Drive reliability improvement by trending failure and field data, identifying recurring failure modes, and building lessons learned into procedures, drawings, and BOMs
- Ensure the technical accuracy and quality of mechanical drawings, BOMs, and production assembly instructions
- Work daily with the inside sales team to support quotations for aftermarket components
- Support Quality with nonconformance reports (NCRs), often by physically inspecting components
- Support production and assembly on other lines, with frequent visits to the production floor to inspect assemblies
- Act as a consulting engineer for less experienced engineers and build the department's technical skills
Who You AreExperience and education- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university
- Direct, hands-on experience with the Caterpillar G3600 platform, such as overhaul or rebuild, teardown and inspection, troubleshooting, testing, or field support
- Working knowledge of G3600 design, operating parameters, wear and failure modes, and OEM service documentation
- Demonstrated experience applying that G3600 knowledge to failure analysis, R&D, performance evaluation, and reliability improvement, including root-cause analysis, data trending, and documented corrective and preventive recommendations
- Familiarity with the design requirements of reciprocating compressor critical components (pistons, cylinders, heads, crankshafts, connecting rods, and frames), including the ability to determine critical-to-quality (CTQ) characteristics
- Strong understanding of industry standards and ASME Code requirements
- Proficiency in creating and reviewing mechanical drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions, including CAD software
- Ability to evaluate nonconforming components through physical inspection
How you work- A strong communicator. Your verbal, written, and technical presentation skills let you work effectively with Sales, Production, and Quality Assurance.
- A sound decision-maker. You make decisions within defined parameters and resolve issues of moderate complexity.
- A mentor. You help less experienced engineers grow.
