Full Job Description
OVERVIEW

S&B is seeking a Senior Staff General Mechanical Engineer that Independently performs Mechanical Design activities for all phases of general mechanical equipment design for a small project or selected segments of a larger project. Must be fully competent in performing all conventional aspects of Mechanical Design and application of independent judgement for the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation of standard design methods and procedures. Assignments have clear and specific objectives and may require the investigation of several variables. Periodic evaluation of work done by less experienced engineers/specialists is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May provide technical guidance for lower-level design personnel. May be responsible for coordinating and reviewing progress of group activities. May assist in the performance evaluation of staff and review of candidates for hiring personnel.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET accredited program

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years' experience in mechanical design or related function area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience)
  • Certification - Successful completion of the NCEES Professional Engineer (PE) Examination (preferred)
  • Requires an active Professional Engineer (PE) License. May require the ability to obtain reciprocal Professional Licensing in additional states (preferred)
  • Detailed experience with engineering and design tools, including common computer aided drafting software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient with reading/interpreting engineering Codes and standards
  • Preferred experience includes design sizing and specification of any of the following:
    • Rotating Equipment - Centrifugal Pumps, Air Compressor Packages
    • Fixed Equipment - Pressure Vessels
    • HVAC/Refrigeration Packages

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepares basic design sketches and performs calculations in support of broader design activities involving the design of equipment, components, structures, or systems.
  • Conducts field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information.
  • Gathers data to help prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval.
  • Evaluates vendors' bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications for simple equipment and specialty items.
  • Participates in the preparation of equipment lists, and specialty item lists. Includes providing specific details for the various simple fixed and rotating equipment in their responsibilities.
  • Participates in the review of design guides and specifications.
  • Prepare equipment data sheets.
  • Read an engineering Code or standard and interpret it (i.e. ASME BPVC, API for simple rotating equipment).
  • Understanding of welding procedures, materials selection and nondestructive examination.
  • Participates in reviews of PFD's and P&ID's.

Travel requirements - less than 10% occasional travel

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before clients or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting to 25 pounds may be required.
