Full Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineering Supervisor:
Manages requirements and mechanically designs components and assemblies related to ground test articles, flight vehicles, test cells and facility systems. Supervises a team including mechanical design, instrumentation design and fluid system design engineers.
Responsibilities:
Performs conceptual and detailed mechanical design; Creates 3D parametric CAD models; performs drawing checks; conducts fit analysis; selects mechanical and fluid components; and integrates instrumentation into product components and assemblies.
Supervises a team of engineers, providing mentorship, reviewing output of team members, and driving tasks to closure. Manages design related budgets and schedules and tracks team performance accordingly.
Serves as a lead engineer on projects -- responsible for reviewing customer specifications, managing requirements and risks; developing engineering task lists and schedules; managing an IPT of engineers and reporting on task earned value and ETC.
Supports customer interface meetings and design reviews; Provides onsite integration and test support as required.
Documents design outputs; Manages standard work processes; and creates tools and templates to improve team efficiency as required.

Preferred Knowledge / Ability:
Expert knowledge of computer-aided modeling (SOLIDWORKS preferred) and configuration management.
Expert knowledge of component sizing calculations, flange design, Design for Manufacture & Assembly, material selection, mechanical system component selection (bearings, actuators, seals), fluid system component selection (valves, pumps, compressors), design of mechatronic assemblies, and design of welded structures.
Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, GD&T, and Bill of Material generation.
Familiarity with supervisory skills such as workload/resource planning, performance management, hiring, coaching/mentoring and ensuring consistent engineering practices are employed.
Familiarity with ASME Section VIII pressure vessel, B31.3 process piping and AWS welding specifications.
Familiarity with design challenges associated with hypersonic high temperature structures.
Familiarity with CFD and Finite Element techniques, inputs and outputs for the purposes of interfacing with analysis specialists.
