Full Job Description

Primary Focus

The Materials Manager will be responsible for the direct management and handling of all raw and finished goods inventory and all warehousing functions. He or she will be accountable for all physical materials, as well as ensuring staff adherence to legislative, safety, and organizational policies and procedures. The Materials Manager will accomplish effective inventory oversight through strong leadership and decision-making skills. Manage a staff of (5) Supervisors with (50) total reports. Other duties will be assigned as necessary.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Ensure safety is a priority with all workers, oversee strict adherence to OSHA guidelines.
  • Ensure and maintain accurate raw material inventory counts.
  • Ensure all inventory and material movement processes are adhered to.
  • Ensure material is moved in a timely and accurate fashion within the manufacturing facility and warehouse.
  • Supervise a team of employees, including hiring decisions, delegation, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Manage the parts shipping and receiving and all intercompany transactions
  • Effectively lead and execute quarterly, and annual inventory counts along with reconciliations
  • Train staff in job duties, safety procedures and company policy.
  • Maintain strict control over inventory levels in order to meet internal and external demand of product.
  • Plan warehouse layout and space requirements in order to prevent loss or damage, and to achieve full warehouse optimization.
  • Maintain appropriate and complete documentation regarding regulated products and/or hazardous materials.
  • Conduct periodic spot-checks of inventory levels, supplies, or equipment.
  • Ensure that all materials are in the work station before they are required.
  • Assess the need for, and arrange the purchase of, moving equipment like trailers, forklifts, crash pads, dollies, and so on.
  • Identify discrepancies between inventory records and take action.
  • Implement and monitor performance metrics for receiving and inventory.
  • Manage time and attendance system.
  • Promote employee development through effective verbal and written communications, cross-training and solicitation of feedback on problem solving and continuous improvements.
  • Resolve any work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and quality of work.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills, team building skills and the ability to supervise and motivate effectively.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Contacts

  • Communication is primarily internal to the management team, production, subordinates, and front office staff.
  • External contacts potentially include suppliers of transportation and warehousing good and services.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires shop work. When working in the shop, one must exercise caution as this environment presents many naturally-occurring and potentially worker-produced hazards. Safety policies must be adhered to at all times. Appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e. safety glasses, hard-toed safety shoes or boots, etc.) must be worn at all times where required. It is very important that the incumbent of this position is able to work and communicate with prudence, while effectively managing time, completing tasks, and working safely.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • College/University degree or diploma in business, with a focus on supply chain or operations management preferred
  • Analytical problem solver with good communication skills.
  • 10 years9 experience in an inventory and/or warehousing setting.

  • Experience with radio frequency ID systems (RFID), bar code systems, and electronic data interchange (EDI) is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with all safe practices, procedures, and overall processes associated with manufacturing from raw materials to finished product.
